This is due to the fact that its streets and alleys contain so many monuments and medieval, renaissance, baroque and neoclassical buildings. Put on your suit of armour and helmet and visit Sigüenza Castle, a majestic 12th century fortress that was built on the site of an even older Muslim castle. During the 19th and 20th centuries it suffered serious damage with the French invasion, the Carlist wars, and, later, the Spanish Civil War. In 1972, it was rebuilt using the original plans and materials and is currently a Parador, a luxury hotel that can be freely visited, both inside and out. The Plaza Mayor, at the heart of the town, is the very essence of Renaissance Sigüenza. Considered one of the most beautiful main squares in Castile, it was planned in the 15th century with a view to having a space for entertainment and a weekly market. Walk through its arcaded gallery, making sure that you don't miss the noblemen's houses that surround it. In the same square, just in front of the town hall, is Santa María de Sigüenza Cathedral, visible from practically any part of the city. Built on a Latin cross floor plan, it is famous for its statue of the Doncel, a 15th century Castilian military man.
