Made Fawlty Towers look like a 5* hotel .Arrived for check in at 2 pm as arranged ,nobody available to allocate room. Young girl behind bar tried to contact manager but they didn't answer phone. She gave us 2 room key after sitting in bar for 1 and a half hour . Landlord had very loud Birthday party for himself in side bar till very late with people on the stairs to rooms swearing loudly. Got up for breakfast at 8.30 am with another couple who were staying , all locked up nobody available. Nobody there when we left at 9.50 am as taxi was waiting ,having had no breakfast which we had paid for . Only plus bar staff were good ,but management hopeless

Not Great…..
So, I knew I was booking into a pub in a busy town so expected some noise. Unfortunately we were in room 10, which backed onto the rear smoking area which meant that, with the window open, a constant smell of cigarettes prevailed. It also seemed to be the staff meeting area so all conversations could be heard and at 0130 we had to lean out of the window and ask people to shut up as we couldn’t sleep. Same in the morning when they gathered at 7….. the room has no warning about a step directly behind the door and I have a bigger iPad than the television. It was clean though. Breakfast usual style. Poached eggs were great, even with the additional hair…..I only paid £100 so should I manage my expectations? Even only paying this, I wouldn’t expect to be able to smell cigarettes and be subjected to noise after midnight. Won’t stay here again.

Great dog friendly hotel. Brilliant area and nice river walk for dogs. Recommend this area highly. Close to the Wolds and lovely affluent area

Great stay in a cosy setting.
Very pleasant overnight stay in a comfortable room with a decent size bed. We were greeted by a friendly member of staff who doubled up as barman/reception. We arrived early but the room was ready, so having dumped our bags, we enjoyed a decent sized BLT baguette and an adequate portion of chips each. The beer was excellent . Having been out and about for the afternoon we returned to The White Bear only to find no space available on the car park. Oh well, I drove around the town looking for somewhere to park and by the time I passed by the car park, there was a space. Just something to be aware of. After the lunchtime experience, we dined in for the evening meal. We were not disappointed enjoying steak and chips plus a tasty bottle of wine. The full English breakfast was perfect for me. Bacon, sausage, egg, mushrooms, tomato and baked beans - all good quality and very tasty. Plenty of toast, both white and brown bread, butter plus a good choice jam. All in all, a really good experience. This is the sort of pub I can spend an entire evening in. Friendly staff and locals, good selection of beer and cider, wonderful.

Lovely experience. Really querky rooms but clean and functional... typical of a listed property. Location was great. Breakfast was tasty and well cooked, service very friendly and the lady who looked after us was very attentive and caring.

Staff were amazing! The website said dog friendly and I had called also to confirm. In reality they are not dog ‘friendly’ but rather so much more. Hugo felt like a KING as he got so much life and affection from the staff. Made our stay so special! Thank you all

Friendly stay
Easy check in, everyone very friendly and they all made a big fuss of our dogs. Quirky room with lopsided window and uneven floor which added to its charm as it is a very old building. Bar prices were a little on the high side. Bed very comfortable and we both slept well. Breakfast was the highlight, top quality produce, especially loved the thyme sprinkled over the grilled tomatoes. My only small criticisms was the pile of rubbish by the bins & the used bbq trays in the beer garden. It could also do with some outside lighting in the back seating area. We probably wont return as we like to visit different places, but we would definitely recommend it as a central point to visit the many famous places that surround it

Delicious food
I was attracted by the breakfast and turned out it was not disappointed me! The breakfast was the best throughout my 16-day travel in UK. It was definitely worthy. Besides, the staff there was very friendly and helpful. I arrived much earlier than the official check in time but they still offered me a room immediately with no extra fee. The bathroom was very large and clean. They got a Sport bar where people gathered to watch football match together with beers. So much fun! P.S. The dinner was also great. They got a very good cook!

Disappointing. There was a loud disco until 1am. Noise travelled a lot through the door. The room floor was quite wonky and the room a bit small and shabby. It was too hot. The lamp kept sliding off the bedside table and it was too bright for a lamp. The breakfast was good. The staff were polite and friendly.

We’d stay again!
The staff were all really nice and very welcoming. The food we had was excellent and a really nice family atmosphere. The only slight issue we had was with the room, but simply because my husband is over 6ft tall and we were in the attic room with slopped ceiling. He had to crouch a lot. It was otherwise comfortable though.

Overall - adequate
Lounge bar and restaurant were fine. It's an old building and a bit dirty and shabby in several areas. Accommodation cost is overpriced. It was interesting to visit Shipston for one night only

Great two night stay at The White Bear
Great two night stay, landlady and rest of the staff were super friendly and welcoming. The rooms are a little dated but this is part of the charm of old pub with sloping floor rooms. Bed was comfortable and room was clean. Breakfast was amazing both days and great home-cooked traditional meal on the first night. Drank in the bar both nights, busy with the friendly locals. Would definitely go again.

I've had quieter rooms.
Room 6 is above the Sports Bar, and Saturday nights music kept us up to Midnight. And the doors kept banging (was that the gents toilet?)! Although I expect 'quirky' for an old building, the decorating needed redoing, cables need tidying up, lamp shades needed dusting, and tea/coffee tray could do with cleaning. And the shower attachment was really stiff such that I was not sure how it operated (and I'm an engineer!). Food was good and staff pleasant. OK as a three star.
