Most staff spoke some some level of English and they definitely made an effort to be helpful. I was in Shanghai for a few days to visit my son who was doing a semester abroad at Fudan University. You will not find a more convenient place to stay if you happen to have business at the university. You are also within reasonable walking distance of the Shanghai metro (maybe 10 or 15 minutes walking). The rooms are clean and pretty well appointed.
