Underwhelmed
Location is wonderful. Greeted by an overwhelming smell of ant spray and ants in the kitchen and living area. Lock stopped working and it took over an hour to get someone on site to assist. That person did not Bring a key and had to “break into” the house to Put new batteries in the lock. Responders shared they they can break into many of the properties of this host. We left early since we did not know people who “broke into” the home to fix the lock. I tried to get someone to call me to discuss concerns. Nobody called me.

We are sorry that your experience with us was less than satisfactory. I sincerely apologize that the electronic lock wasn't functioning properly which understandably caused you some inconvenience You did notify us and within an hour our crew was on site. Unfortunately, the call came after hours and we are located in a rural area but the response from our team was immediate. I don't feel the term "break into" is appropriate in this situation since it implies entering without consent. Our team was there to help you gain entry. This was an unfortunate situation and not one we have experienced before. We have since made changes so this never happens again.

Awesome 9-5 Getaway
My wife and I, along with our doggo, spent 3 nights at Culag and it was everything we were looking for. We both work 40+ hrs weekly and haven't taken a break in a while, and this cozy little out-of-the-way house was a perfect escape from everything. Two bikes and kayaks were available for use (though we unfortunately only utilized the bikes due to the water currents [we're novice kayakers]), kitchen fully stocked with cooking utensils, bathroom fully stocked with towels and all toiletries, smart TV and WiFi, perfect all-around! Great for a single couple (1 bed in bedroom) or 1-2 kids (pullout loveseat bed in living area). Owner was very quick to respond to messages, both before we arrived and while at the house, really couldn't recommend more! Only "negative" is personal preference, the bed was just too firm, as we both prefer softer beds. Finally, as with any out-of-the-way properties, make sure you're prepared to lose cell service! I stupidly forgot and had to drive back to the main road to gather the entrance credentials as I had no service, totally my fault for not being prepared. We'd definitely love to return in the future!

LOCATION!!
We love St Mary’s County but have never stayed at the southern tip. It was beautiful. What a surprise to see sunrise on the Chesapeake Bay right from the porch! Culag was perfect. It is tiny but has everything you need. There is a queen bed in the single bedroom. We normally like a king…a king might fit, but the quality of the mattress was perfect. Nice and firm and it gave us a comfortable night’s sleep. The main living space is a living room/kitchen combination. The loveseat is a twin pullout bed as well and the side chair and ottoman are substantial. We found the rolling kitchen cart unnecessary and taking up space so we easily moved it into the ample bedroom closet during our stay. The bathroom adjoins the bedroom and is roomy and includes a washer and dryer in the interior closet located in the bathroom. The sunroom gives more sitting space including a small dining space. I’d want to flip the chairs if possible to face the windows but it may not be possible to fit with the entry door swing, but that’s a minor suggestion. The kitchen is nicely equipped including a grinder for coffee beans—wish I had brought some! The porch offers even more seating to enjoy what is most spectacular, the location. The beach is a bit of a walk back towards the main road that takes you to the property but worth it. What a view and tiny slice of heaven. There is not a lot of restaurant selection south of Lexington Park. We ate at Hacienda Los Guayabos Mexican Grill one night and Pier 450 for Sunday brunch. The Mexican Grill had a good selection, great service and was a bargain especially noting that the kitchen is open after 9pm. Pier 450 was excellent! We would come back to the area just for that. Again, location, location, not to mention a wonderful chef and menu. I wanted one of everything! I know where to stay next time I’m in southern Maryland!

A great spot to get away
Overall we had a great stay! The property is very quiet with lots of space for pups to explore. My husband and I enjoyed the deck and grill every night. The private beach nearby is awesome, but was a little farther of a walk than expected. We went almost every day and were alone each time! The house was also great (the perfect size for two people). Wifi was perfect! We did have trouble with ants and spiders in the house. There were spiderwebs and dusty areas as well. All were manageable, but we wished we had brought a bottle of all-purpose cleaning spray or found some bug spray. Overall, we loved our stay and would recommend to anyone wanting a quiet little spot with a short walk to a quiet beach. Our pups loved it too!

Quiet and cozy
This cottage was in a very friendly neighborhood. We felt like we had a private beach although it was close to a quarter mile walk. Bay views were limited as the front porch was unusable due to overgrowth of shrubbery and disrepair of porch boards. Upon arrival, the cottage had hair remains of previous pets with fur on bathroom walls. Also ceiling corners had cobwebs, and there was a hole in the kitchen cieling. Garden was so overgrown with weeds, my wife ended up weeding the garden and were pleasantly surprised to find flowers growing. With all of this, we had a wonderful vacation.

Relaxing
We had a great stay. Clean, neat. Everything we expected! We knew that it was secluded, but I want to make sure that whoever is coming, make sure you plan what you want to eat TOTALLY, and bring it with you. No ice cream stores, no grocery stores..all 20-25 minutes away, one way. Same with any restaurants. Great time.

Quiet, pleasant getaway
The property is just as advertised - small but with everything we needed for our short visit. Met our main criteria which is that we can bring our dog along with us. Not many options for food in the area so next time we will bring more groceries but other than that we thoroughly enjoyed the stay. Quiet and peaceful with views of the Chesapeake and a short walk or bike ride to the private beach area. The bed is very comfortable and there is plenty of hot water with good water pressure in the shower. Kitchen has all the dishes and cooking utensils we needed. We enjoyed our stay.

Cute Little Cottage for a Getaway
A little bit off the beaten path, but this place was adorable! I happened to be in the area and the owner was nice enough to let me stay for just one night before I had to start heading home. It really was the breath of fresh - albeit salty! - air I needed to reset my mind. I used the provided bikes and biked to the community beach nearby, and got to dig my toes into the sand while watching the waves. It’s such a cute, removed, area too- I can’t wait to come back.

Adorable Cottage with Easy Beach Access & Views from Deck
This location on the Chesapeake Bay is perfect for a getaway. One one side of the property is wooded land and on the other side Bay views. Plus is only two hours from Washington, DC and no Bay Bridge backup! Feels spacious for size. The new local restaurant Pier450 was also a big plus. I love to cook but everybody needs to eat out sometime on vacation.

Last minute switch made by company… pictures are deceiving
I rented a different cottage at first..,company said there was a septic problem at first choice, so they moved me to a different cottage right next door. The 2nd location smelled musty, spider webs were present, ac didn’t work properly, remote to ceiling fan not working, bikes were rusty, washing machine was very loud …AND when I drove by my first rental, it looked like they had rented it out. I didn’t see a septic company working on the property. There was a truck backed in there all week and towels on the deck. If there really was a problem at my first rental, I am very, very thankful this company didn’t cancel on me, but I would think some kind of refund for my inconvenience would be a nice touch. Especially if there wasn’t a real problem and they just wanted more money by renting out another place. With that being said, I would NOT use this company again.

We regret that there was an unavoidable problem with the septic system at the cottage of the guest's first choice. Any truck parked at the first location would have been our own property manager's truck or other external workers. The problem turned out to be electrical and was difficult to diagnose so the guests might well not have seen any obvious work like digging going on. We certainly did not double rent and we don't bait and switch. We have a long history of rental to hundreds of happy guests. We did our best to find a second accommodation for this guest during the high season which is 100% booked. We are glad that the guest appreciates that we didn't simply cancel their reservation and worked hard to do the very best we could for them.

Cottage at Summerlee
My original booking had to be moved because of a septic issue at Culag, so the management company moved me to the Cottage at Summerlee. It wasn't as nice as Culag--no Florida room, a very small double bed, really just a studio with a partial room partition. The beach access was nice, though. The cottage was fine, a little dark, but the management company could take maintenance more seriously. An overhead light didn't work, and they insisted it never worked and no one could figure out why. Then they sent someone out, and it turned out there were no bulbs in there, and no one had ordered any. The AC in the main part of the house also did not work, and they insisted no one could fix it. The guy who came for the light tested the outlet and found the problem immediately. I wouldn't be surprised if these problems aren't fixed for the next guest. The cottage would be quite a bit nicer with more thorough maintenance, and the location is great.

As hard as we try, sometimes things happen. When they do - like this septic issue at the original house - we try our very best to accommodate our guests. In this case, finding them an alternate property during the height of July was difficult. So, the replacement cottage (of equal size and only a block away) was not 100% perfect because it was not planned for guests that week. But, I have to say that we tried hard for the two sets of guests scheduled at Culag who had to be moved until the septic issue could be diagnosed. Most owners would have just cancelled the guests completely so we feel a little sad at this review. At least no one can say we don't take every possible step not to cancel guests' bookings when the inevitable goes wrong at some point.

Nice, but not clean
We have rented the Summerlee Cottage from Scotland Yards/Peggy Binzel before. This was our first stay at Culag with the same property management company. The house itself is nice, quiet, and peaceful. The heating was great for the very chilly stay. The only downside was that almost every single dish was very obviously dirty. Coffee droplets in mugs and yellow on forks, like egg yolk, and smears in cooking pans, and more. I emailed the property manager twice about this, but still have not received any response. It's not very reassuring for any potential future stays with this company. Great area for some down time and beach exploring, though!

We so appreciate our return guests and are extremely apologetic that any guest would find one of our houses less than spotless. Since the time that this guest visited us, we have changed to different cleaners and more oversight. We are very pleased with our new cleaners and trust that guests will once again find our Scotland Yards houses to be in great order when they arrive. We take pride in being a cut above. We are sorry that we failed in this instance but are happy that we corrected the problem.

We loved our stay at this snug and cozy house by the bay. A lovely winter trip--we spent our days walking to the little beach head down the road, going to the State Park for a longer walk on the beach, and watching the skies. (By day, the clouds scud in from the bay At night, star watchers will be pleased, as we were, by the spread above.) The house had everything we needed to cook and relax. A lovely stay--we will definitely return!

The Wee-One was the perfect sized property for just my husband and I. The cottage was positively charming inside and out. You felt immediately "at home" even though had never been there before. The area, water and surroundings were delightful. The only thing negative to mention, not in the place itself, would be to update the description with more detail on how to find the community beach and the actual distance as it is far more than a block and a half. I loved our stay very much!

We had a lovely long weekend at Culag cottage! We brought all of our food for the weekend, which was good because the closest grocery store was about 25 mins away. However, there are adorable country stores, produce stands, and a stocked Dollar General to get any necessities you may have forgotten . The bikes and the kayaks were a really nice touch! Biking through Point Lookout Park was a highlight of our trip. The beach was very nice too! It is a community beach, but we never saw another soul there. The scenery is beautiful and relaxing! Just what we needed. I definitely recommend bug spray!! It was very helpful to keep the mosquitos at bay!

A Great Little Getaway
We decided to rent this cottage for a weekend away, and we are very glad we did. The home was clean, cozy, and quiet, and just a short walk from the water. We only ever saw one other person in the neighborhood, and on more than one occasion, we'd look out the window to see deer chomping on the grass. The only issues we had concerned the matress and the bathroom heater. The mattress could be replaced, as we both had some back pain for a few days after check out. And the heater in the bathroom would occasionally loudly screech for no perceivable reason. That said, we still loved our stay and would gladly come again!

The cottage is gorgeous. My husband and I felt very comfortable there. It has every thing you need for a perfect gateway. We normally lodge at a good hotel. But this time we wanted to travel with our pet so that a cottage Culag "The wee one"was the perfect choice. We took there her crate to make feel her comfortable too and take care about the place. We enjoy walking on the beach and on the natural park. We love the space in the bathroom and the bedroom. Every thing was almost perfect. The only complaint was the rain and the warnings of floodings because of the storm Melissa. We could be better with better weather.

I enjoyed our time. I didn’t do much research on the area and was surprised that we needed to drive a lot to see things, except the state park next door. Also didn’t realize the bay had jellyfish and that swimming at the beach wouldn’t happen. It was an area I had never been to, so I was able to learn about the history that occurred near by.

We are an "away" destination. The best groceries and the like are about 15 miles away. But there are some local things too, like saint Mary's City and Point Lookout State Park, plus kayaking and biking. We are also excited to be working on opening a new destination location that will include a 450 ft pier (Pier450) and restaurant very nearby our houses. As to the jellyfish, some years they are virtually none some years there are a few more. If they are around, it's usually late in summer. It just depends on the amount of rainfall we have had. Jellyfish like dry weather and high salinity. Very few guests had trouble with jellyfish this year but we agree it would be great if there were none at all! We appreciate the kind comments, too!

It truly is "the wee one." Small, nothing fancy, but adequate for a couples getaway. While not waterfront, there are views of the Chesapeake Bay both from the front room and the deck. On July 4, we were able to see amazing fireworks right from the dock across the street! Also a great place to watch a sunrise over the Chesapeake Bay and nesting osprey and other birds. The Culag cottage was exactly as pictured, very clean, on a private road, very quiet community. We enjoyed our long weekend get away, with our dog Zoey. The beach was empty almost every time we went there, several times a day to take walks. Not much to do in the area (thanks for the local grocery and restaurant information though from Peggy, we had some places to find meals, etc), but we had planned to relax so it was perfect. We did explore the nearby state park, and there are also marinas in the area.

Cute house, nice walks
The house is small but the perfect amount of space for a couple, and no room felt small. The kitchen in fact is the perfect size for cooking, and the front room is wonderful for eating breakfast to the sunrise or enjoying the evening nature. Clean, convenient, a little ways from town so one should get provisions on the way. The beach is beautiful, set in front of a lake, wide open to the bay. We enjoyed walking and biking around the neighborhood, there's not much else to do nearby except see Pt Lookout, the war memorials, and St Mary's City. We had dinner at Sunset Cove about ten minute drive away, which was also good. I would recommend it and we would return.
