Another great Summer Vacation on the Shuswap

A group of friends and I stayed for two weeks this past summer and had a great stay. The cabin was as advertised and worked well for our group. Scott was easy to get a hold of and getting in and out of the cabin was simple. Scott left us alone to enjoy our time there. The mooring buoy made things very easy as we had a surf boat we used daily. The view from the cabin was impressive.

Gem of a chateau on the lake!

I celebrated my birthday here with a big group of friends, we had a blast. Despite pretty constant rain we had a blast. Yes the cabin is old and not impeccable, but I believe that is reflected in the relative and fair price point. As such I think if you keep the expectations realistic it's a fantastic spot. The lake is right across the road and serene (perfect for a SUP), the shower is warm and the hot tub is fantastic with a view of the lake. I recommend heating the hot tub as soon as you arrive; we got in late and had to wait for it to warm up overnight. Will rent again!

Always a Great Stay at Henderson Lookout

Our family and a few friends enjoyed a great stay this past August at the Lookout. This isn't our first visit to this rustic and homey Chalet as we have stayed during the winter as well. We love the location, incredible views and the separate suites for privacy. We appreciate that our fur baby is also welcome here. The stairs are definitely a workout, but well worth the effort. Relaxing in the hot tub with a coffee, taking in the morning sunrise is a great start to our day in the Shu. The road is busy in front of the house; keep an eye on any children and pets. However, they do provide baby gates to prevent them from taking off. The beach this past visit was incredible and it helped that the weather was AMAZING! We love that we can bring our food and cook all together, each person bringing their delicious creations to the table. It is also helpful there is a grocery store/liquor store so close by if we forgot anything. Definitely, a great place to get together with family and friends; plus Scott is very easy to work with!!!! Thank you for sharing you house with us!

Not as advertised

So disappointing and frustrating. The description of the property was not accurate and I don’t know when the pictures provided were last taken, certainly not in recent years. Maintenance and cleanliness are obviously not priorities. We felt we had to wash dishes and towels before using. Caulking in bathrooms was disgusting. Some cupboards were nailed shut and others dirty inside. One of the toilets had a do not use do to leak sign. Decks obviously had not been cleaned in a long long time. The home smelled like smokers lived there and they tried to cover up with febreeze. When I contacted the owner and voiced our frustration his response was “Disappointing that you do not find the Lookout to your standards”. Really? I am sure having a clean and maintained property would be a minimal expectation of anyone. When I asked about possibly getting some money back he stopped responding to me. Later in our stay we also noticed that the posts that provide structural support to the upper landing have become completely detached from the porch itself. I could go on about several other things as well. We left a day early and will never return. Horrible just horrible.

Not worth it

This place was not worth it at all, we drove about 5 hours with 3 children hoping for a good cold snowy weekend to enjoy. Instead, we found a place that was very unsafe. Wood burning fireplaces that did not work without smoking up the whole house (only one of them was working), electrical heating elements located in spot where you could have easily cause a big fire like behing the couch where lamps are plugged in right above it (in fact the cables were already black from heat exposure). Stairs are very steep and the railing to wide for anybody to hold on to specially when wet or snowy. The worst part of it was the house was very dirty, sheets and matress cover had blood stains, dishes were dirty, not vaccumm, etc. We went to the store to buy cleaners, sponges and tea towel to wash everything before we lay down on anything AND one of our kids found a syringe!! in one of the drawers. Needles to say, I almost turn around if it wasn't because we had 3 hungry kids after 5 hours of driving. The cleaning charge is not a problem as long as it gets done but that house had not been clean for a long time. I really think the house needs some serious updates to make it safe and a major cleand up. I email the owner inmediately and he said: "the cleaners must have missed it" . I do not recommend it at all. MG

Needs some maintenance

Upon arriving at the cabin all members of our group were very disappointed. The information for the cabin says parking for 7 vehicles, we were barely able to fit two trucks and a boat trailer. The driveway is also on a sharp curve, making it difficult to back in as the road in front is very busy. Once walking up to the first deck where the hot tub is located we realized there was no beer fridge as shown in the pictures. There was also a lot of junk laying around that needs to be thrown away, old bean bag chairs etc. that are far to dirty to sit on. All of the decks could also use a good sweep and pressure washing. From there the stairs to the second level apartment are very old and falling apart, made me nervous to use them as it looks like they may give way at anytime. The metal railing along the steps to the top apartment is also very wobbly and unstable. The buoy in the water is unmarked, and to close to the dock, our boat was 21' and would have hit it. We were able to use the neighbours fortunately. But the neighbour did complain to us about the lack of upkeep from the property manager. The kitchen was well stocked and had everything we needed. Lots of linens in the laundry room. The beds are old and uncomfortable, blinds on the east facing windows didn't keep any light out and the couple staying in that room were up each morning at 6AM. Patio furniture is old and the pillows stink, the extra chairs in the kitchen were dirty and stained. The add lists bikes as an activity but there is only one. We also had a mouse in our cabin. The cord on the lamp in the living room was all burnt as though it had been on fire at some point. With a few furniture upgrades, repairs to the deck and stairs, and a good cleaning this rental cabin could be great, but as is right now I wouldn't go back.

Not a bad place to stay. Owner was great but the place wasn’t overly clean and the stairs were a lot to deal with over 5 days with kids.

Good for the price

After reading the reviews in this property, I was very prepared for what I was walking into. Great location, cute and cabiny, some amenities missing or items broken. Would’ve loved to show up to enough toilet paper for the first few nights and maybe a roll of paper towel. The deck was extremely dirty, screen over the sliding door is so broken it doesn’t keep bugs out, hot tub was a bit dirty and missing it’s filter. Still - considering the fair price and cute cabin, we did enjoy our stay. Would not recommend for more than 8 or 10 adults comfortably.

Many, many, many stairs!!!

Positives: -The owner was excellent with communication -The 3 queen beds were comfortable -The house was clean -The view was fantastic -The hot tub was clean and large -The BBQ is newer (never used it) -Internet was good Negatives: -Appliances need updating; lower level oven was unusable. Upper level fridge is freezing items at the back, despite adjusting. Upper level freezer is repaired with duct tape. Many repairs throughout with duct tape actually. -No dishwasher -All screens on windows need replacing; big gaps in the half screens, lots of crawly visitors -Screens needed on slider deck doors; the tatters hanging in their place are not sufficient. Again, an open invite for creepy crawlers and flying ones -Several of the deck chairs are threadbare and it's a roll of the dice before someone breaks through -Several of the dining chairs are really filthy and quite wobbly; again, just a matter of time before one breaks -The sleeping cubbies in the lower level could use proper bunk bed type ladders, the one step stool was actually too short for most people to easily get up and it was not in good condition -The suction port at the bottom of the hot tub is missing a screen. We let the owner know as it is a safety issue for anyone with long hair going below the surface. Ex. Young girl retrieving a toy -Lastly, there are over 50 stairs to climb, (not including the spiral staircase to the upper level bedrooms) not recommended for small children, people with breathing issues or mobility issues Summary The property is for sale, so I suspect none of the updating that so desperately needs to happen will not be done. Not all bad, overall for a younger group it would suffice

Beautiful location. Loads of space.

The beach was beautiful and the view from the deck is amazing. All in all we had a great stay. The lookout had everything we needed, including space enough for 8 adults. It is true the place is a dated and worn, but it is very affordable for the size and location, comes stocked with everything you need, and has a cottage vibe that invites you you kick back and not worry about a thing! My only warning would be theres tons of stairs and you must watch your step on them at all times as they are old and some are uneven. I wouldn't recommend bringing anyone elderly or unfit. Also a surprise was we had to packout our own garbage, but it was a very easy process with the garbage station being on the way out of the area. Scott, the person I was in contact for the rental with was very attentive and friendly. Thanks again Scott!

Okay

We arrived to walk up all stairs to third floor to find that the code lock does not work. One of the stairs to second level door is not the same height as others so a tripping hazard. Very top landing is being held up by a 2x4. We did not use this entrance. Some wood bars were missing on second level railing making a hole big enough for small children to fit through. We barricaded with the safety gate that was their. BBQ was not cleaned in a very long time. We had flames coming out of BBQ on the first night high enough that we had to turn off BBQ and move away from deck railing. Inside of BBQ was not cleaned and the drip tray was filled and overflowing. Had to scrub clean once cooled off. The BBQ brush was old and worn. Could not use it to clean BBQ. The furniture is very worn and frayed. Some furniture was broken and not useable. Never found the bunk beds that were listed. When we booked a year ago the listing said sleeps 14. This year it said sleeps 12. Owner assured us it would be fine. We had 9 adults and 4 children. It did not sleep 9 adults. 6 adults would be good and 6 children. This location is not very good for small children nor older people due to the stairs. Two flights just to get to the lower level of house. One of the fans that was provided was broken. The house does not have air conditioning so the fans are important when it is very hot. There is a smell in the downstairs bedroom closet that we could not identify. Kept closet closed. We made it work. We let the owner know of issues and were offered an extra night free that we sadly could not take. He also asked for a list of broken items. Hopefully these items will be fixed before the next renter. The beach was lovely. We had great weather and spent most of our time by or on the water. Numbering the buoy for the boats might be helpful as we tied up to the wrong one. The owner of that buoy was not there that weekend though. The neighbours are very friendly and helpful as well. The local market and grocery store had what we needed. There was a playground just up the street. But be careful walking as there is no sidewalk and nobody seems to drive slowly even with all the signs advising of children in area. The wildlife was very nice, eagles, fling squirrels, bats, dear (a doe and two fawns), salamander and ducks. All in all it was a good vacation just needs a bit of upkeep done on property.

this is a very comfortable home.

We totally enjoyed our stay. The two separate units gave us privacy from each other. We used the hot tub everyday. The view is gorgeous. The front right burner on the stove is hard to understand as the knob does not function properly. Overall, the house was very clean and well equipped. We would definitely stay here again.

I wasn't expecting much, so it was as how I expected. A lot more stairs then I pictured though.

For what we payed, I would have liked things better. It was hard to find pots with lids, we had to go buy garbage bags and toilet paper. No room to store food. The hot water tank is electric, so took along time to wait for warm water after a few showered. The house was very clean.

View and decks are amazing!

The views and decks at the lookout are amazing and Scotty is very easy to deal with, always replies quickly. The home is rustic and spacious and great full dogs are permitted. The new BBQ on the deck made cooking simple. I would have given a 5 star rating if the lower living area carpet and pullout couch were replaced and a set of complete dishes, utensils and BBQ tools were supplied. There are dishes and kitchen utensils but mixed and matched and some should be tossed, this gives it the 3 star feeling as opposed to the 5 star experience.

Overall great stay

We stayed at the lookout for 5 nights in the end of July 2018. The location is great and the place worked very well for us. The good -Scott was very accommodating with any issues, and was always quick to respond. -The views are fantastic. -The home had everything needed. -Location! boat launch, stores and dock so close by meant we didn't have the need to drive anywhere. The not quite good -This is an older home with need of some updates. Definitely a rental home as it isn't in tip top shape. Not a problem, but the only thing keeping it from being 5 stars. Overall we were very pleased. We were expecting rustic so this fit what we were looking for. We would definitely consider staying again. Thanks Scotty
