The romantic Upper Danube Nature Park and the town Scheer welcome city travellers with unique, historic buildings and the popular fountain festival.
The little town of Scheer in Baden-Württemberg is embedded in the Upper Danube Nature Park between the Swabian Jura and Upper Swabia. The famous Danube cycle path runs through Scheer along the banks of the Danube. The Romans settled in this area from approximately 400 BC to approximately 400 AD. This city along the Upper Swabian Baroque Route was home to the famous poet and author Eduard Mörike who was originally from Ludwigsburg.
Impressive buildings await visitors on a city trip to Scheer, among them the parish church Saint Nikolaus, a famous landmark of the city. The three-aisle basilica was built in the 14th century and was transformed into a baroque building 400 years later. The interior impresses with artistic stucco, masterful paintings and sculptures, many of them created by the sculptor Joseph Anton Feuchtmayer from Linz.
Not far away lies the charming late Gothic castle Grafenschloss Scheer on a rock spur. This three-gabled stronghold is a beautiful example of the Renaissance style. A bridge leads to the marvellous park with an expansive English landscaped garden. Somewhat in the shadow of this castle stands Bartelstein castle. It was built during the 12th century and was named after the execution site which was once located here. The condemned were executed with a “Barte” — a hand axe.
A city trip to Scheer will also take you to enchanting small chapels. To the north, the pretty Loreto chapel invites you for a visit during your mini-break or short trip. The church was completed in 1631 and is dedicated to the Holy Mary. It reminds of the pilgrimage site Loreto in Italy. There are reports of processions and pilgrimages to the chapel from as early as 1719.
The Hindenburgplatz in the centre of Scheer offers a marvellous view of the Kondebrunnen fountain, located under an impressive linden tree. So-called Fasnetskonden — journeymen who came here together regularly on Shrove Tuesday — constructed it according to their own plans in 1975. Above the fountain troughs on a pedestal with gargoyles stands the statue of a journeyman on the road.If you visit Scheer in July during your city trip attend the popular fountain festival. Over Easter, the fountain is decorated with painted Easter eggs and pine wreaths in the style of the Easter fountains in Franconian Switzerland.
