The house is a great location to trail ride. Ample space for our group of 9. There was a hornet nest on the side of the house but Gary was quick to take care of it. We would stay here again.
Very clean. Close to trails. Can't beat the price or location. Forgot something? Don't worry, this place has it, just in case. I'm sure we will rent again.
Very convenient location, close to Rock House and Devil Anse systems. We had a power outage our first night and Gary stopped in to check that we were okay and see if we needed more batteries for the provided lanterns. Just a note, when the power is out, the wifi obviously goes, too, and cell service though both Verizon and AT&T is nonexistent until you get closer to the gas station on 44 and 52. Well equipped cabin! It's nice to sit on the back porch and listen to the creek, or light a fire with the provided wood and roast some s'mores (chocolate, graham crackers, and marshmallows provided!) Bring your clothes and some groceries and you're set for your stay.
From the beginning to the end Gary the host communicated with us brilliantly. The cabin was just as we expected and the attention to detail is second to none from the amenities to the coal and firewood. We stayed for two nights and it was a real restful environment from driving from NC and then being on the UTVs the next day. We enjoyed cornhole and being with British friends they enjoyed the different surroundings and experience of the WV countryside. I would definitely recommend Papa Bears for anyone wanting a beautiful retreat after a long drive or an adventurous day in the trails and it is perfect for all age ranges.
Papa Bear's Den was a perfect place for my husband and I to stay with our son and daughter in law. Plenty of space, comfy beds, well stocked kitchen and linens, great TVs and even outdoor areas to cook and visit. We loved sitting in the backyard listening to the river.
Gary was a very responsive and friendly host and went out if his way to make our stay nice. He's put a lot of love and care into the house and it shows. I especially appreciate him not being stingy with things like TP, trash bags, dish soap, etc. It was so refreshing to not have to worry about those little conveniences.
If you're interested in history, you can walk to the Hatfield Mccoy Museum or to the cemetery Devil Anse is buried in (it is a little hike uphill to the cemetery).
If you're into trail riding, this is the perfect location. If you don't mind trailering, Cabwaylingo and Warrior (we parked in Welsh) trails are an hour away. Buffalo and Devil Anse trail heads are less than 30 mins away. All of those trails are easy enough for new riders. If you're a slightly more advanced rider, you can pick up Rock House and Devil Anse blue trails (slightly harder) just 5 minutes away from the house.
The house has plenty of room for parking which we've found is very rare in this area. Our Ram Megacab and 32 ft trailer fit just fine with room to spare.
Overall, this was a great stay. We highly recommend to anyone...especially those wanting to visit the Hatfield Mccoy Trails. Can't wait to come back!
Words cannot describe how great the owner is. He was more than accommodating and gave us all the tips on how to get our trail permits for the trails. He even stopped by to make sure we were all good and didn’t have any questions. It was a mile down the road to two different trails and we could just drive our side by sides right to the trail my truck and trailer never left the driveway. I would stay here again when visiting the trails.
The inside of the cabin is adorable and they have thought of your every need. It is comfortable and well stocked. We walked up the trail leading to the Hatfield Family Cemetery, and visited the museum as well A lot of WV history in such a small museum. The Lady running the store/museum was very nice and very happy to answer all of our questions about the Hatfield and McCoy feud. She had much interesting information being a direct descendent to Devil Ance Hatfield.
The Host (Gary) goes out of his way to make sure you have EVERYTHING you need for an enjoyable stay! He communicates and asks if there is anything you need. The house was awesome and clean and was well stocked with EVERYTHING! When he says you don’t need to bring anything but your clothes, he really means it! I will definitely return! Thumbs up!
