The best area to stay in São Salvador is the historic centre, particularly around the Praça do Município. This area is the heart of the town, offering a blend of historic architecture and convenient access to local amenities. You'll find many of São Salvador's most important landmarks here, such as the Igreja de São Salvador and the remains of the old castle walls. The streets are pedestrian-friendly, making it easy to explore on foot, and there are numerous small shops, cafes, and restaurants. For couples looking for a relaxed and culturally rich experience, the historic centre is an excellent choice. You're within walking distance of all the main sights, including the Miradouro da Portas do Sol, which offers impressive views over the Tagus River. The evening strolls through the historic streets, stopping at a local restaurant, are a highlight.Solo travellers will also appreciate the historic centre's convenience and accessibility. For most travellers, the best time to visit São Salvador is during the shoulder seasons of spring (April to June) and early autumn (September to October).During these months, the weather is pleasantly warm and sunny, but not excessively hot, making it ideal for exploring the town and surrounding natural beauty. You'll find fewer crowds compared to the peak summer months, allowing for a more relaxed experience at attractions and restaurants. This period also offers good value for hotels and flights, as prices haven't reached their summer highs.Summer (July and August) brings very hot temperatures, often exceeding 30°C, and is the busiest time for tourism. While the river beaches are popular for cooling off, exploring historical sites might be less comfortable. If you enjoy a lively option and don't mind the heat, this can still be a good time, especially for families looking for summer breaks.Winter (November to March) is generally mild but can be wet, with cooler temperatures. While some days can be bright and clear, others might be rainy, limiting outdoor activities.
