See the glorious 17th-century painting by an Angolan slave that survived earthquakes and remains in pristine condition in this church.

The Sanctuary of Las Nazarenas is an 18th-century church in the centre of Lima. It is a hub of spirituality and tranquility. The complex incorporates the monastery as well as the sanctuary. The surrounding area is animated with vendors and street performers. Pilgrims come from around the world to see the Lord of Miracles painting by an Angolan slave in the 17th century.

Gaze at its baroque façade with elaborate décor and gold columns. There are two black-and-white strips of material that convene at the top of the church, next to the Peruvian flag. Marvel at the oil painting of the crucifixion of Jesus. It hangs on a wall of mud. A black slave from Angola painted it almost 400 years ago. Devotees make pilgrimages year-round to see the work of art. It is said that the painting was found in pristine condition after a devastating earthquake destroyed most of the buildings in Lima.

Browse the various altars dedicated to the Virgin and Jesus. Gaze up at the tasteful dome in the roof in the centre of the church. In October, there is the procession of the Lord of Miracles, where purple incense burners fill the halls.

Enjoy the lively atmosphere as you walk around the adjoining street, Jirón Huancavelica. Admire the decorations around the street with a religious theme. Haggle with vendors selling spiritual artifacts. Get your future read with tarot cards. Eat sweet local delicacies such as honey nougat fig and picaron, which is a Peruvian desert consisting of sweet potato in donut shapes.

The church is dedicated to the Señor de los Milagros (Lord of Miracles), who is the patron of Lima. It was built in 1771. It opens its doors to the public at dawn until noon, then again from the afternoon until the evening.

The Sanctuary of Las Nazarenas is located in the area of Tacna, several blocks to the west of the historic centre of Lima. The area is just south of the Rimac River. The Castilla Bus Stop is a few blocks northwest of the site. The Monserrate Railway Station is near to the bus stop. Plaza Mayor, arguably the most important historical area of the city, is nearby. It contains the Cathedral of Lima and the Government Palace.
