"Relaxing getaway."
This is a relatively small resort an hour away from the airport. The main pool area is pretty busy and fun. The beach is quiet, especially at the outer ends. Definitely recommend exploring the west end of the beach for a quiet, relaxing beach day -- where chairs are plentiful and the bartender isn't overwhelmed. The vast majority of food is buffet, even two of the a la cart restaurants (Italian and Asian) offer appetizers via buffet and serve your main course to your table. The Asian restaurant was our favorite -- good food, fun staff and nice surroundings. Raphael was our favorite waiter and took good care of us, even at the buffet. A long weekend here would be perfect for a quick getaway. We found a full week was a bit long. The shows were okay. Everything is spoken in English, French and Spanish, which means it takes three times as long to say something. Definitely take a walk up the street to the shops, bars, casino and disco. Note, you have to pay for drinks at the casino. Bring bug spray if you spend any time outside -- or Calamine lotion if you decide not to use bug spray. Overall, a very nice, economical vacation spot.

Pocket Guide: Rio San Juan, Puerto Plata Casino Hotels

Rio San Juan is a fishing and farming town on the North Shore of the Dominican Republic, supplying most of the region’s fish. Boat tours are available on Laguna Gri Gri, a clear-water lagoon forested by mangroves. A number of bird species can be viewed here, and their return to the lagoon at dusk is an awe-inspiring sight. For beachcombers, a long beach bordered by coconut trees is to the east.
