About this property
Rustic 3 bedroom loft in Old Town
The place makes all shopping, entertainment and cultural events within reach, enjoys light and airy views to surrounding historical architecture and has an unmatched flavor of an old warehouse with rare wooden lifting wheel in the living room. Great for a staycation, as a work-from-home alternative, meeting with friends or family.
Apartment is located in a quiet part of the old town, but at the same time not far from all of the Old Riga entertainment and recreational destinations. The views from the apartment allow you to observe a surviving section of a medieval fortification wall that has been restored in 80ties, St. Jacobs Church, small, but enlightened fragment of Saeima (Latvian parlament), Dome Cathedral, depending wich way you look out. For centuries the space was used as an attic warehouse with built in wooden lifting wheel for moving goods up and down. It has been refurbished in 90ties into a three bedroom living space but has kept the rustic character of an original warehouse.
Historically building belonged to a land property with 6 residential buildings constructed in 14-19 century. Of which the 14th century stone building with our attic apartment is the only one that survived from the medieval Russian trade settlement. In 1537 when it re-appeared in Riga real estate book entries, it was marked as Ernst van Mengden's residential building. Mengdens (German: von Mengden) is an ancient Baltic German family known in Livonia since the 15th century and was recorded in Vidzeme and Estonia Knighthood's matricula.

Aldaru street is very quiet in winter time despite being in very heart of the city. It is partly pedestrian and has only limited car traffic on it. But it becames a lively tourist and local vacationers place during summer months as it has four sunny cafes next to each other on both sides of the street. Close by there are museums, art & souvenir shops and a street artist selling his work on the corner next to entrance in the house. It is pretty close (3. min walk) from main tourist attractions in the rest of Old Riga - Dome square and Livu square. In a few minutes you can walk up to eight hundred year old Riga Dome Square, the cafes, restaurants and nightclubs, as well as in the opposite direction – the beautiful promenade along the Latvia's largest river Daugava and a unique Riga central market, whose spectacular pavilions are included in the list of UNESCO cultural heritage. Old Riga is also home for several concert halls, such as the Great and the Small Guild in which you can regularly enjoy the performance of the greatest Latvian and foreign artists. Near the apartment are very interesting museums and exhibition halls.
Apartment is situated in an excellent location, a bus stop is about 5 min walk from which in 20 minutes you can get to the Riga airport. Tram and trolleybus is even closer. In a few minutes walk there is also Riga Central railway station and the central bus station from where you can easily get to any place in Riga or even Latvia. There are very convenient city transport connections to the city centre and other parts of Riga.
Firstly, there is no elevator to access our apartment, and you'll need to ascend a historic spiral staircase from third to the fourth floor (see pictures). This staircase has been a part of our house's history for centuries, and it adds a truly special touch to your stay. However, it's worth noting that the space within this spiral staircase is quite limited, with a width of only 60 cm and a height of 170 cm.
We acknowledge that this can pose a challenge, particularly when carrying larger or heavier luggage. To make your journey to our apartment more manageable, we recommend packing lightly or using smaller suitcases.
Once you've made it up to the apartment, you'll find a comfortable and inviting space waiting for you. We hope you have a fantastic stay and enjoy all that our Attic has to offer.
As our house is located in a live tourist area and historic building, you may hear the sounds of happy people outside and sometimes the guests below you. This is part of the charm and character of our home, and we hope you will enjoy the experience of staying in a building with so much history. However, if you are sensitive to noise, we recommend bringing earplugs or a white noise machine to help you relax and enjoy your stay.
We also want to remind our guests to be mindful of the noise they make, especially during evening hours and when using the stairs in the bedrooms area. This will help ensure that our downstairs guests are not disturbed.
Please note that two of the bedrooms in the apartment are on top of one another and are not separated by a door (please see the pictures above). Tall people should take care, as the lower edge of the wooden wheel in the living area is only 1.80 m from the floor.
Additionally, please be aware that the apartment is split into three levels with internal staircases (please pay attention to the photos). As such, the place may not be completely safe for children under 3.
Thank you for choosing to stay with us and we look forward to hosting you. We hope you'll have a wonderful time in our historic house and in the city.
