Pocket Guide: Recess

Hotels @Recess

The N59 winding west through Recess is hardly a major road, but constitutes a stretch of the celebrated Wild Atlantic Way. It passes serenely through a landscape of majestic mountains and lakes, into which any visitor is then able to retreat yet further from the rat race to the hotel of their choice.

It seems the rule of thumb in the hinterland of Recess dictates that the further you withdraw into the wild mountains amid lakes, bogs and forests, the greater the luxury available in your hotel.

Two luxurious hotels are situated within Recess, while a little further along the N59, where the road meets the coast, the accommodation options expand, along with the watersports activities and the sea views from the bedroom window of your hotel, B&B, guesthouse or hostel.

Things to See and Do in Recess

While peace and quiet are two of the key attractions for many visitors to Recess, the immediate area offers a multitude of outdoor activities ranging from painting and fishing to hiking and biking.

There are cultural and historical hotspots to visit, too, but out on the coast a few miles beyond Recess, the beaches and the sea inevitably become the focus of attention for many more sports and activities. Hotels on the coast, around and beyond Clifden, may therefore more often be geared to the demands and the pace of family holidays.

A Traditional Luxury Hotel in Recess

Situated some seven miles north of the N59, secreted on the forested shores of Lough Inagh, lies the 4 star Lough Inagh Hotel, originally a fishing lodge in the late 18th century. As is important when you’re this far from the beaten track, the dining, home comforts and choice of amenities are first class. There really aren’t many hotels back home that can offer fishing and golf so close at hand, with hiking and mountain biking trails starting right from the door.

Stay on a Castle Estate

The palatial Ballynahinch Castle Hotel is a sight to behold, its lake-strewn estate offering enough activities to make the rest of beautiful Connemara almost seem surplus to requirements. There’s boating, fly-fishing, tennis, river walks with guides, horse riding, clay and woodcock shooting to choose from – not to mention guided boat trips taking in the seals and deserted island lobster-fishing communities out in Roundstone Bay.

The famous hotel’s own pub and atmospheric restaurant are fit for a prince and princess.

Enjoy Your Hotel Stay in Recess

Whether you’re looking for a romantic break in luxurious seclusion, an idyllic getaway break packed with rural pursuits or more hectic coastal activities, Connemara and Recess in particular can offer you the exact accommodation you require along with a great big Irish welcome.
