Get there by traveling down the Seward Highway in Anchorage about 50 miles towards Seward. The drive itself is breathtaking, but the trip into Portage, AK is a whole other animal. Thousands of glaciers top the (very tall) mountains and the bluest water you have ever seen can be seen trickling down the sides of these mountains, forming awe-inspiring lakes and rivers. $34 (or less- coupons are online) will get you a 1 hour tour in the Ptarmigan around Portage Lake. You come to about 300 yards away from this monstrous beauty for rare photo ops, all the while listening to a park ranger narrate the history of the area around you. While the glacier itself is beautiful, you won't want to miss these gems of a view. The glacier silt turns the water the most amazing shade of blue- you feel like you are in a painting!
