The city of Plzeň is where Pilsner lager was born. This popular beer has been produced by the Pilsner Urquell Brewery for more than 170 years. Explore the brewery’s old cellars, discover traditional brewing methods and sample the beverage straight from the barrel. Sign up for a guided tour of the brewery and let your guide lead you from the visitor centre to the modern bottling facility. Examine the state-of-the-art equipment, which can process up to 120,000 bottles and 60,000 aluminium cans per hour. Watch a short movie about Pilsner Urquell beer production and learn more about the drink’s ingredients. See the original brewing kettle that was used to make the first batch of Pilsner lager in 1842\. Pick up insights into key people who have contributed to the history of the brewery across three centuries. Compare brewing technologies when you visit the early 20th-century brew house and the modern brew house from 2004\. The tour also includes information on how science has influenced the brewing process over the years. There are also exhibits that document the story of Pilsner workers whose daily efforts helped the brand succeed. Go down into the old underground cellars. Here, small quantities of beer are made in exactly the same way as the first batch was made by Bavarian brewer Josef Groll. Marvel at the size of the large beer barrels and taste unfiltered and unpasteurized beer poured directly from them. Other sites on the brewery complex that you will see include the water tower. It dates back to 1907 and resembles a Dutch lighthouse. You can visit Pilsner Urquell Brewery only as part of a guided tour, which lasts for approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes. There are regular tours in English several times a day and fees apply. Discounts are available for children, students and senior citizens. Only adults can sample the beer. (1,003 reviews) The location was the best part of the stay (apart from the breakfast); right in the heart of Old Town and walking distance to everything. Our Uber had to drop us off a very short distance away necessitating us to lug our luggage for 40 secs or so. Not a big deal! Removed 1 star because of a check-in snafu. The room given had 2 single beds (for a couple) because the hotel was fully booked and despite we making the reservations 3 months in advance. The room felt like a converted attic with the beds perpendicular to each other. There wasn't enough space to join them or bring them together. The shower was whole another issue with the showerhead so low that anyone above 5ft7in wouldn't be able to use it properly. We stayed for 2 nights but kept feeling the hotel stiffed us on the room with no compensation / the day manager not even bothering to come and talk to us. The breakfast spread was good and sitting in the room facing the Astronomical Clock Tower was a treat in itself. Would have rated this 7/5 given the history of the building, amenities, location if not for the room issue. Expedia Support was on point and worked with me quickly but they also couldn't do anything.
