Practice meditation and yoga in the shadow of the giant forested mountains that surround Parmarth Niketan. Take part in the spectacular aarti ritual in the sacred water of the river. Visited by pilgrims from all over the world, the largest ashram in Rishikesh contains more than 1,000 rooms. During their stay pilgrims will carry out a strict routine that includes prayer and lectures as well as plenty of yoga and meditation. Join those who use the peaceful gardens at Parmarth Niketan to meditate. Find a quiet spot in the shade of tall eucalyptus trees or stroll around and admire the bright flowers and trimmed hedgerows. You will find several stone figures here with depictions of Shiva and hanuman in larger than life form. Yoga is extremely popular with classes for all levels running throughout the day. Learn the basics with the help of an instructor or join the advanced group to perfect your bird of paradise and downward-facing dog. You can’t come to the ashram without spending an evening at the Ganga Aarti. This vibrant cocktail of music and singing takes place on the edge of the river every day just after dark. After drumming and bell ringing the pilgrims light small oil lamps and place them onto the water. Watching the flickering lights floating through the blackened water into the night sky is a truly mystical sight. Parmarth Niketan is located in the small community of Swarg Ashram on the eastern bank of the river. If you are looking to use the accommodation here it is worth booking in advance to ensure that there is space.Food is not included in the cost.
