Sopron featuring interior views

Quaint Hungarian towns comprise this historic region filled with a wealth of cultural and religious attractions.

Pannonia is an ancient region of East-Central Europe, home to a rich history and a variety of charming towns. Visit Esztergom, the seat of Hungarian Catholicism, best known for its enormous basilica which dominates the town’s skyline. Explore the churches of Győr and discover the history of Sopron. Relax in Pécs, known as the “City of Grapes and Wine.”

Once a province of the ancient Roman Empire, the Pannonia region has a long and turbulent history. Explore its many towns and villages to learn more about the region’s heritage. Modern Pannonia centers on Hungary, but also encompasses parts of Serbia, Croatia, Slovakia and Slavonia.

Head to Esztergom to visit the colossal Esztergom Basilica, one of the largest churches in Northern Europe. Step inside to admire its extraordinary architecture, notice damage from the destructive Turkish invasion and see valuable art and artifacts.

Visit the medieval town of Győr to view its ancient churches and museums. See the chapels and frescoes of Győr Benedictine Church. Constructed in 1627, it was the first of many churches built by Jesuits in the region. Inside, marvel at the wondrous marble and gold of its Baroque details.

Enjoy the warm climate of Pécs, which is known for its production of excellent wines and fruits. See the 11th-century Pécs Cathedral with its neo-Romanesque exterior and Gothic interior. Note the curious combination of Islam and Christian art and architecture found at the Mosque of Gazi Kaszim Pasha. Stroll through Széchenyi Square and view its lovely historic buildings and monuments.

Walk the cobbled streets of Sopron, which has been inhabited since the time of the ancient Celts. Find out the story behind its unusual Goat Church and see the impressive views from the top of the Firewatch Tower. Visit the luxurious Esterházy Palace, an opulent 18th-century palace where composer Franz Joseph Haydn once lived.

Travel to the Pannonia region by plane or train. Budapest Ferenc Liszt International Airport offers good connections to the many towns and cities of this region.

See the diverse cultural attractions of this historic area.
