This 2000 square foot, remodeled farm-style house from the early 1900's borders the old Arcata-Mad River railroad line that ran to Blue Lake and was established in 1880 (aka the Annie and Mary Line). It is located on a shared property with River Way Cottage (2 bed/ 1 bath) which can be rented separately and combined with West End Retreat (3 bed/ 2bath) for a great family or friend reunion for 10 people with 5 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms in total. These homes are approximately 200 feet apart offering ample privacy when rented separately but close enough when rented together for a convenient shared experience. An acre and a half of rural Arcata paradise, it is conveniently located ½ mile to beautiful Mad River perfect for fishing, sunbathing or a game of frisbee golf at Pump Station #4 and less than 5 miles to Cal Poly Humboldt, downtown Arcata, The Arcata Community Forest and so much more! This historic home has been lovingly remodeled for the perfect blend of comfort and style w/ beautiful antiques and mid century modern decor. It has radiant heat throughout most of the home with individual thermostats in every bedroom for ideal comfort and is bathed in natural light with almost 40 windows and two sun-tubes. It has stunning wood features throughout including walnut countertops in the kitchen, old growth redwood accent walls in the bathroom and Fir trim in the sunroom.

Located upstairs, the main bedroom offers privacy, romance & relaxation with a King bed and a two person clawfoot soaking tub. The other 2 bedrooms are outfitted with Queen beds. Guests will sleep well on all of the brand new beds made up with high quality linens from Restoration Hardware and West Elm. The second well appointed bathroom offers a nice shower, great after a long hike in the Redwoods. Guests will love to cook on the gas stove in the fully-stocked kitchen with a coffee/tea bar and dining table for 6 or head outdoors and barbecue on the propane grill and dine at the new picnic table. After a great meal, relax with the new 70" flat screen tv in the sunroom (with dark-out curtains) or enjoy a family game with many games to choose from. The large yard (1.5 acres) has well established fruit trees which guests are welcome to enjoy picking from in season (apples, plums, cherries, blackberries).

Guests will love birdwatching while sipping their morning coffee/tea on the covered porch with a table and chairs for 2. In the evening head outdoors and relax with 6 Adirondack chairs perfect for stargazing or just kicking back at night under the dimmable stringed lights and breathing in the crisp, clean air. Everything is a stone’s throw away, including two Mad River Public Parks with barbecues and picnic tables great for bigger gatherings. Take a scenic drive North just 15 miles to Trinidad with pristine beaches, continue North another 5 miles and stop to visit Sumeg Village, along the next 15 miles are a series of stunning lagoons (Humboldt Lagoons State Park) and finally just 45 minutes after leaving West End Retreat explore Prairie Creek Redwoods State Park with endless hiking trails. This home has everything needed for a deluxe, comfortable stay- luggage racks (2 per room), blue-tooth speaker, USB ports in each bedroom, beach towels, and a picnic basket.

Great stay at West End Retreat
My husband and I, along with our mothers, spent 3 nights here to attend our son's Humboldt graduation in December. It is spacious, clean and had everything we could need. Though we didn't do any cooking, the kitchen seemed well equipped. If I ever come back to the area with a group, I would definitely stay again.

West End Retreat
We loved our stay! It was peaceful, comfortable, and clean. Our family ranged in age from 1-79 years old and we all felt comfortable and at home. We saw deer, quail, and a bob cat. The house is as advertised. It was personal, cozy, modern, clean and provides everything you will need to stay comfortable. The furniture was comfortable, and we loved having two living areas where we could stretch out and provide quiet to whoever was sleeping. Would absolutely rent again.

Great stay on West End
We enjoyed our stay on West End. As prior locals, we really appreciated the thoughtful decor throughout that gave it a real sense of place, such a kids' books by Humboldt authors. We had a bit of trouble checking in with the address provided, but the host was quick to respond and get us in! It was a great, quiet location near the Mad River with easy access to the highway to go in any direction. The house had everything we needed for our group of 2 adult couples, with room for more.

Gorgeous home and property!
My family (2 adults and kids age 5, 8, 10) spent a long weekend there. The home is just beautiful, super clean, and felt very luxurious with fluffy towels, pretty soaps, and hand- knit washcloths as well as very pretty rooms, bedding, etc. The yard was large and very green. Kitchen had everything we could need including olive oil and spices and herbs. There were abundant books and magazines for the kids which was really great. Thanks for a great stay!

Home away from home
We can't say enough good things about the West End Retreat. This place has it all, plenty of room, comfortable furniture, well laid out rooms, local information, games and books, modern kitchen with everything you'll need to cook great meals and the list goes on and on. The labels throughout the house were very helpful. Highly recommend.

Amazing Vacation House
Wow- this place is just amazing! The house is beautiful, spacious, and well stocked with everything we could need. There was such an attention to detail by the host- quite possibly the best vacation rental I've ever stayed in. There are lots of things to do for little ones including games and books which was wonderful. We loved the soaking tub and the kids enjoyed the yard. The beds were super comfortable. Thank you so much!

Absolutely lovely home!
We absolutely loved this house. It is probably the nicest rental we have ever stayed in. It is better in person than in the photos. It has been completely remodeled, with an amazing and very functional kitchen, spacious extra room with TV, games, and table. Lots of room to spread out. All 3 bedrooms were spacious and comfortable. The entire house was impeccably clean. It was a cold March week when we were there, but the well-designed outdoor spaces (covered porch, seating area in yard) and spacious, private yard would be fabulous in the summer. There were lots of thoughtful touches, such as the separate, fully stocked coffee and tea bar, and the hand-knit washcloths for our use throughout the house (as well as a gift of 3 for us to take with us!). The only small suggestion we have is that the lighting could be improved/brightened in a few areas. We recommend this house and would definitely stay there again if we are in the area.

Nicely remodeled farm house. House is very well maintained. Very accommodating with kitchen supplies. Not to far from town to get a good bite eat.

Wildlife viewing family setting
Multiple deer, with buck antlers in velvet, California quail daily, both adults and babies, lots of birds, variously colored. Also gargantuan mosquitoes in the evening. We also saw a doe and fawn in the stand of redwoods just east of the house and about a mile farther east in a field a bobcat or lynx. The house was perfect for three adults and two children ages 8 and 11. It was extremely well outfitted and attractive and spotlessly clean. The manager was easily accessible and friendly. The pre-visit communications caused worry because they seemed so fussy that it might be uncomfortable, but this worry dissipated during the stay. This house is just a short drive from Arcata and McKinleyville, and a little farther from Trinidad. It has a rural feel, however, and being so close to such abundant natural beauty and fine dining was great. The kitchen and dining facilities (indoor and outdoor) also made it a pleasant place to prepare our own fine dining. Walking or running is problematic on the main road because of how narrow and winding it is, but just around the bend 40 feet from the driveway, turning left, is a much less used road that goes past a park and along the river, and it felt safer for running and walking.
