Charming Irish House in Oughterard
During our recent family trip to Ireland, we had the pleasure of staying in a delightful traditional Irish house in the quaint village of Oughterard, nestled along the serene shores of Lake Corrib. This charming house boasted a beautiful fireplace which became the centerpiece of our evenings, providing a cozy, warm atmosphere that enhanced our experience. Oughterard proved to be a hidden gem, with its lovely town and incredibly welcoming locals who made us feel right at home. Do yourself a favor and do your souvenir shopping at John P. Keogh & Sons Irish Gifts and Crafts! Then have a pint at Powers Thatch and if you are lucky enough to be in town on a Sunday, make sure to get there early for the traditional Irish music. The house itself came equipped with all the comforts necessary for a family, ensuring a seamless and comfortable stay. Both the host and the caretaker were exceptionally responsive and attentive, ensuring that every aspect of our stay was managed perfectly. We are immensely grateful for their hospitality and the memorable experience they helped create. We eagerly anticipate our return to this beautiful spot in Ireland. Highly recommended for anyone looking for a genuine taste of Irish charm!

Gorgeous tranquility on the lake
Absolutely loved our week at the house on the peninsula by Lough Corrib! The house offered everything we needed for our family of 4. The property is beautiful inside and out, and the views of the lake through the back windows are breathtaking. A 5 minute drive from the property puts you in the charming town of Oughterard which offered several options for dining, grocery, butcher shops, and cafes. The property manager Mike was fantastic and checked in regularly via messaging to see how we were. We would (and likely will!) absolutely visit again!

Beautiful views
This home is situated on a peninsula that allows views of water from both sides of the home. The wide windows give opportunity to take it in as well as the comfortable seating to sit and read. The rustic home felt cozy with the working fire place and we were provided ample supplies to keep a fire each evening. While there, it was very cold and were glad for it. A short ride to the village and some nice walks there can be found. A great spot to then venture around the area.

* Great, but …
* GREAT location, beautiful views and a really great property manager! That stated, the property is run down and terribly in need of repair and updating. Overall, we had a wonderful time with family but would’ve been more comfortable at a hotel in town. It’s certainly a place we’d want to come back to if the property was cleaned up and updated. Thanks to Mike for making our stay as comfortable as he could … he alone gets 5 stars for bringing us firewood and answering all our questions!

Dear Robert Montgomery lll I would normally thank guest for taking the time to post a review, and welcome constructive criticism however in your case I will not do so, as your comments are entirely inaccurate, misleading & insulting. You state the property is run down & in need of repair, that would imply something is broken or not working which was not the case, during your stay you did not once raise any issue, including informing mike of anything being broken or not working, and we are not aware of anything that is broken or not working at the property, so this would therefore imply you are making up this statement, In the Same vein neither did you inform him of your “discomfort” during the stay so I’m afraid I will also discount this as another fiction. We are very confident of the quality of both the fit out and soft furnishings of this property, equal to most 5 star hotels pressurised groche power showers, b&b italia leather chairs, Smeg fridge freezer, new encaustic tiles shipped directly from Morocco .. high end beds & mattresses, with hotel quality linen to name a few. At the very least you did appreciate mikes hospitality, so at least you are capable of appreciating something. However if you don’t appreciate the property as it is, which we believe does not need updating, indeed we restored it to retain the original character of the property from 1950’s only quite recently.. then our property is not for you & I would like to invite you not to book with us again, the local hotels will certainly be more appropriate for you. Probably the most beautiful location you could hope for!
The location of this property is stunning. Was hypnotised by the view from the back of the house the entire stay. Oughterard is also a great location, close to both Galway and the outstanding Connemara. Only downsides were the amount of spiders, spider nests across all the windows. A jet wash or brooming could have solved quite easily prior to arrival. Also they were joined by millipedes in the house. It feels it needs a bit of TLC on the inside - flooring in en-suite and kitchen. Would highly recommend if these small things could be taken of. Both Nick & Mike very responsive

Hi Gary, thank you for your frank feedback, we do try to keep the spiders cleaned from the outside windows, but it is a real challenge especially in peak summer with the flies by the lake and the spiders are very resilient creatures returning & rebuilding their webs shortly after being cleaned away.. but I can assure you Mike does clean them multiple times each month in the summer. I personally haven’t experienced any millipedes, and we do clean the inside of the house thoroughly between stays, if any bugs find their way into the house during a stay there isn’t much we can do about it unfortunately.. in any case I do apologise for your experience. In terms of the flooring in the en suite and kitchen, these are original encaustic tiles which we imported and fitted from morocco only 7 or 8 years ago, (also in reception room and main bathroom ) so I’m not sure what the issue could be with it? maybe you could let me know separately so we could try to address the issue? In any case, It was our pleasure having you as guests & I hope you would chose to return again in the future.

What a gorgeous setting on Lough Carrib! We enjoyed stunning sunsets over the famous lake. The house is spacious and wonderfully equipped. It is close to the friendly little town Oughterard and only 25 kms away is Galway. The house is a great base from which to explore western Ireland. The owner and caretaker were extremely helpful.

Magical Freshwater Peninsular Home
When you first pull onto the tight drive through overgrown and overbearing hedgerows, down the winding path, your breath is waiting in anticipation. There is a small pull off beach to wade in or perhaps launch a small craft or SUP. Then you pull into the gate and you are at such a lovely house with such great features of a fireplaces, a dock to walk out over the water, breathtaking views of Lough Corrib , the mountains to the West, and the island off to the northwest with sheep scurrying around. Had no idea this was Europes biggest freshwater fishing lake until I read about it during our stay. Not really mentioned by the owner. The small village of Oughterard, which not people outside of a few miles will have heard of, was great! I could see staying at this house for an extended time period with friends who like to fish, renting a boat and fishing the lake. Ideal situation frankly. But the two kids 8 and 11 both enjoyed the fresh air, the water, and the yard. There were cob webs inside that denoted a house that was a holiday house which hadn’t been used in a little while, but it only vaguely detracted from the experience. Would recommend this house and would certainly stay there again if possible.

As you mention It’s true that there are quite a few spiders around, it comes with the location by the lake where there are an abundance flies whose life cycle incorporate the lake, we do our best to thoroughly clean the inside of the house, including spiders, but of course the odd spider or two may always slip through, or sneak through the window when no one is looking! In any case, we are very glad you enjoyed your stay & you are very welcome to come back any time.

Beautiful view
The home is a nice mid century modern style with beautiful lakefront access and a great little community nearby. Owner was VERY accommodating when we arrived to the area earlier in the day than expected. We asked to drop off our bags and he allowed us to go ahead and check in. The bed in the main bedroom was possibly the most comfortable bed in all of Ireland...lol The exterior really needed a good powerwash as there were spiders and webs everywhere (keep in mind the home is lakefront, so that can be expected) But it really creeped us out with the windows open for airflow. A small personal annoyance, the shower curtain in the main bath needed to be hung a bit lower and weighted at the bottom. It was a tad high, so each time we took a shower, the curtain placement would allow it to blow in and out and either stick to you or allow the bathroom floor to flood. Ultimately it was a beautiful home and should we ever return to the area we would have no problem with booking again.

Hi Estelle, thank you for the very kind and detailed review. those spiders outside are certainly a bit of a nuisance, and we do regularly jet wash the outside, however they seem to be the most resilient creatures ever & you can often find cobwebs rebuilt just a few hours after being jet washed! I will definitely be on the lookout for a more effective treatment, although I haven’t found one yet.. regarding the shower curtain, I completely sympathise, I think it’s to do with the air being displaced by the power shower when the water comes out quickly, but I’m not sure what causes that exactly, I think the only solution is to put a glass shower screen on instead of the curtain & saying goodby to our nice fish shower curtains 😪, but maybe it’s something we should do, in any case your observation has certainly directed our attention back to this and hopefully finding a solution without losing the fish shower curtains! In any case, thank you for staying at our holiday house & please feel free to come back any time & hopefully we will have mostly resolved the above issues!

Location, location, location!
If you like great views of the countryside including lake and mountains you'll love this property, with the lake almost on your doorstep front and back. I couldn't give the full five stars because a couple of maintenace problems arose during the stay as can happen anywhere but both the property owner and property manager went out of their way to deal with them.

We spent a full week at Nick’s place. The house, on the lake, is amazing. The view, the fireplace, the town nearby, everything was superbe The area offers the best scenic views ever! We came here to run the Connemarathon and truly had a beautiful experience. The owner of the j’house is very responsive and try is best to make sure you are always comfortable. Five stars experience !

Great Time !
We rented this property for 3 days while we visited around Galway. Didn't want to stay in the city - just wanted a beautiful setting to relax and recoup from traveling . Place is set right on the lake - spectacular views. Beds were comfortable -everything you need in the kitchen. Really enjoyed the fireplace - burned a lot of turf! Want to thank the Property Manger Mike - what a guy. He received into town - showed where to get food staples and then escorted us right to the cottage. And we needed his help because it can be a bit tricky driving the lone road to it. We had some minor issues that popped up our first night but they were quickly taken care of by Mike. He was a nice, affable guy and was always just a phone call away. Our last day we were blessed to wake up to a double rainbow across the entire lake - what a view. Anyway - I recommend this property highly.

Peaceful and relaxing
East to book, check in extremely easy. Was met by Mike the property manager coming into the small town and brought to the house. Nothing was a problem to Mike. Clear instructions on how everything in the house worked. All appliances available. You don't need to bring anything except for your food. Mike went over and above, great advise about the local area, where to eat and drink etc and he even went and got me firewood. Thanks. All in all an extremely peaceful,tranquil, relaxing few days, even with the wind and rain. But that's Ireland

Idyllic Fishing Lodge
This is a spacious, modern fishing lodge set right on the edge of Lough Corrib, with stunning views onto the Lake. It is truly peaceful, so ideal for those either wishing to fish, or simply to have a complete get-away. It is very private with no-one overlooking you. If you are looking for peace, tranquillity, space and immersion in nature, this may well be the place for you.

Fantastic location
This property is situated on a quiet road to nowhere with an absolutely stunning views over Lough Corrib. The property itself has bags of character, and whilst it could do with a bit of TLC is perfect for a relaxing break away, the bed was super comfy which ensured a good night's sleep. Thank you John for the kind review, very glad you enjoyed your stay, indeed the midges can be a bit pesky in the evening, one of the downsides of being beside the lake.. and indeed the drive is a little tight especially for large cars, my Land Rover is the size of a truck.. but it is the angle of the gate posts that makes it more difficult. So we have cut away at the bushes and scrub that have grown into the turning circle, so now it is definitely easier to navigate Into the drive.

We truly enjoyed our stay. Peaceful and tranquil. The house is exactly as described and the manager is extremely helpful. Be sure to listen carefully to the instructions to back into the driveway. One of the drivers decided to try to drive forward into the driveway and was not successful (thankfully we had full insurance coverage). I hope we can stay again!

Given the angle its always best to turn right before turning left into the gate so as to give more room for the car on the left side. My car is very large and it fits in fine as long as i don't try to turn in in one lock! I will add this to the arrival instructions as it is useful information. Planning to Stay Again
Although we had planned lots of activities in Connemara we were often tempted to stay in the house and gaze out at the gorgeous view. House was super comfortable, kitchen works well, lovely fireplace, great spaces for relaxing inside and outside. Cool modern architecture, too. Fantastic location right on Lough Corrib! Property manager was close by and very available for whatever we needed. Overall great place.

Superb setting
Beautiful setting. Oughterard fabulous little town with some great pubs and restaurants. The house itself is pretty tired looking, could do with some updating. You cannot fault the setting or the peace and quiet.

Fantastic stay here
Our stay here was fantastic. Stunning views of lake in a beautiful setting, pictures do not do it justice. Large open plan sitting room and kitchen ideal for family/friend get togethers overlooking lough corrib. Quality of kitchen equipment was excellent. Beds were extremely comfortable and cosy. Mike was so helpful and friendly throughout or stay providing us with anything we needed. Would highly recommend!

Stunning lakeside architectural gem
Had an amazing experience at this home on the shores of Lough Corrib. My wife and I really enjoyed the views and peacefulness of the property as well as its convenience to many local historic sites, nature walks and great food options at nearby restaurants. The team who oversaw our stay were great - Nick and Mike were very attentive and helpful with every aspect of our experience . We will definitely return for hopefully an even longer stay.

Fantastic family holiday

Unique Cottage in Stunning Location!
You can’t get closer to Lough Corrib without actually being on it! The panoramic views from this lodge are beautiful and it has really interesting original furniture, light fittings etc. The big open fire adds to the ambience and Mike the manager was very helpful. Great for fishers but also for others who want to relax by the lake. We will come back to this unique cottage.

Ideal family home located over looking Lough Corrib, with stunning views.
We had the most amazing stay. The house was so peaceful. The access to the private jetty was a special treat for the men to go fishing & the kids to go into the water from the front garden! Loads of space in the house and all the facilities were in the house, again ideal for a family holiday with kids. The house is located, only a short drive to Oughterard, which has a good choice of shops, pubs & places to eat. We went on a boat trip to Inchagoill with Kevin, which was a big highlight of our trip. He was brilliant to deal with, highly recommend him. Would love to return next year, as its a gem of a house.

Lovely house with stunning views
Lovely house with a vintage feeling. The living room (and 2 bedrooms) have bay windows with amazing view of the lake. Be prepared for stunning sunsets! And so practical to watch our teenager while he was fishing from the pier. House was very well equipped. Neighborhood is very quiet and friendly. Ein etwas in die Jahre gekommenes Haus am See mit sehr viel Flair(positiv).
Am See gibt es viele Mücken allerdings keine Moskitos. Der Blick aus den Panoramafenstern ist überwältigend. Das Haus ist mit allem in Fülle ausgestattet. Die Betten sehr gut. Unvorstellbare Ruhe. Leider braucht man immer das Auto auch zu demOrt der leider auf dem Autonavigation nicht finden ist.

Das haus liegt wunderschön am See und verfügt über große Panoramafenster. Die Ausstattung ist perfekt, es fehlt an nichts. Perfekte Kommunikation mit dem Gastgeber. Besser geht es nicht. Jederzeit gerne wieder!

Großzügiges Haus direkt am See
Großzügiges Haus mit vielen Rückzugsmöglichkeiten und großem Garten mit direktem Zugang zum idyllischen Lough Corrib. Sehr ruhige Lage unweit von Oughterard, wo es Einkaufmöglichkeiten, Pubs und Restaurants gibt. Nicholas kümmert sich rührend und hat zusätzlich Betreuer vor Ort. Jederzeit wieder.

Sehr schöne Location mit einem wundervollen See. Bei Fragen wurde bald geantwortet und der Mike, der hauskeeper war immer höflich und hilfsbereit Sehr schöner Aufenthalt
