The town itself was busy as it was a local holiday. The town is not really worth seeing full of run down shops and market stalls and wine shops. The racourse is worth a visit if races are on. We spent two nights and visited the Grand hotel which is only 5 minutes walk away. The hotel has great value for dinner with good food from Pizza to local curry. We drove to Horton Plains and did the 9 klm walk. Some very nice views but watching the locals walking was of interest also. We saw deer and a gecko and that was the wildlife but this walk is more for the views. Check out the Indian restaurant and coffee bar dowfrom the Grand hotel for good food also.This hotel provides free driver accommodation. The staff were excellent, so polite and couldn't do enough for us. We met the chef on our last day he was great. It was walking distance to good restaurants. The room was very clean, the bed comfortable and there was comfortable furniture (maybe a bit too much) in the room so you could relax without having to sit on the bed. The drain in the bathroom did have a bit of a smell but it might have been that the pipes were dry. The shower had good pressure. We left very early the first morning for Horton Plains so they packed a breakfast for us, which was great.
