Posted 12-Jan-2016
Wonderful old hotel built to host guests coming in from the railway Has recently been renovated with attention to period details We had no issues with construction noise during our stay Room was clean, ample size, with amazing bathroom Service in garden room was slow (only had one server for the room) Would definitely recommend!

Two days in York

Posted 09-Jan-2016
Pros: The location.
Cons: Almost everything inside the room.
York is great, but this hotel, unfortunately, is far from that. I would expect, from a 4-star hotel, at least: 1) to have a desk and a chair in the room, where we could do some work; 2) to have some drawers, where we could store some clothes instead of leaving them in the baggage all the time; 3) to have a safe, where we could leave the passport and other documents. I believe that all these "amenities" are quite obvious. Well, our room had none of the above. I had to check my emails on the bed, because there was no desk at all. The room was so small that there was no place for even a chair: there was only a bed. And that's all. There was a small fridge the occupied most of the wardrobe, and left no place for anything else, except the hair dryer, thrown on the floor of the wardrobe. And no drawer or shelves at all, neither inside nor outside the wardrobe. Not even the bedside tables had a drawer. In the bathroom, the shampoo and the conditioner stood under the sink, because there was no place for them. I spent two weeks travelling all over England and Scotland, and this was definitely my worst experience with a room. And it was far from being the cheapest one. Except for this, the hotel building is fine and very near the train station. But it didn't worth the price.

An historic hotel next to York station

Posted 19-Dec-2015
Pros: It was like olden days of rail travel but with modern hotel facilities. A very nice setting.
Cons: A slight delay in checking if our room was ready.
Location: Although outside the city walls it was just a short walk to the city centre with its many attractions.
We travelled by train to York and this hotel has direct access from the platforms. The hotel has been refurbished to a very high standard. Beautiful gardens. Our room was in the garden annex which was ideal as it was very quiet. Although we did not use the restaurants, they looked superb.

Convenient lication

Posted 21-Nov-2015
Refurbishment meant facilities in the leisure club were not available. The room offered was not in the hotel and most services offered were from the hotels adjoining conference/events suite which I didn't book.

Great location. Great room. Breakfast could have option of ordering from the kitchen. Only downside was that the spa facilities weren't available.

Traditional hotel in an excellent location

Posted 16-Nov-2015
We stayed at this hotel 4 years ago and loved it. The hotel is currently going through a renovation and wil look fab once completed. The newly decorated rooms look fab, although we did have a few negatives regarding the room, the colour scheme is quite dark and the lighting was not bright enough especially when I was doing my hair and makeup near the dressing table and the mirror on the dressing table was positioned too far back so I couldn't sit on the stool and see properly out of the mirror other than these few minor issues I wold definately stay again

Nice hotel

Posted 09-Nov-2015
Pros: the room
Cons: The service in the restaurant, put face towels in that bathroom (no idea why 4 stars hotel has no face towels)
Location: Location is next to the station which is a perfect choice for late arrivals.
I liked the room, it was nice and spacious. The beds were very comfortable but the pillow was for me little high and firm and my neck hurt the next day. Also there was some noise at 4 am that woke me up. In the bathroom There were no face towels, robes. I do not think the room and bathroom were perfectly clean but it was OK. At breakfast the girl did not find us on the list and said she sis not have anyone in that room simply because she was looking for a wrong room. I think they should train their staff better than that. It was rude. She could simply ask about our room again. The bar was nice too.

ROYAL YORK

Posted 02-Nov-2015
Pros: Not a lot very expensive, good staff on the whole the Cocktail bar staff were superb
Cons: Pretty much everything.
Location: Very good location, ideal for exploring the city
Hotel is being refurbished, room was OK but on the fifth floor the lift only went to the third floor then 37 stairs!!! No heating in the room and a tiny en suite made for a bearable room but not what I expected for the price. All staff except the reception staff were superb. I thought the breakfast at £15 per person very expensive.

Beautiful, old hotel and comfortable stay

Posted 01-Nov-2015
Lovely hotel in the middle of restoration works so not at best. Room clean and comfortable, fantastic airy, clean bathroom with powerful shower. Water, tea and coffee in room, helpful staff. Downsides- queue at breakfast was long and took ages to get served but we weren't in a rush. I'd stay again.
