Grand Hotel next to the Station

Posted 26-Jul-2016
Pros: It's position, a very short walk into York, next to the station, ideal if arriving by train. Plenty of parking and the lovely grounds and garden.
Cons: air conditioning would be a definite advantage.
Location: Location very good, very near to the railway museum, station and only a short walk into York
A very welcoming reception, staff were excellent and so friendly we had gone to the Hotel for my birthday and my husband mentioned this to Vanessa our check in lady. We were given our room key and went to the room, within five minutes there was a knock on the door, one of the staff were there with a bottle of presecco in an ice bucket and two glasses with a card for me wishing me a happy birthday and a pleasant stay. We had a meal in the Refectory restaurant on the evening of my birthday where I was presented with a complimentary plate of cakes with happy birthday piped in chocolate round the rim of the plate. Such a lovely surprise, all the staff were lovely.

Enjoyable stay in beautiful surroundings with friendly, helpful staff. Our superior room lacked air conditioning and had very limited wardrobe / closet space.

Outstanding Staff

Posted 27-Jun-2016
Pros: Staff, well appointed room, nice breakfast, free wi-fi
Location: Right next to the train station, this was perfect for traveling by train. It was a short walk to the old city centre and all the sightseeing sites
Spent 3 nights at the hotel while exploring York. We were given a complimentary room upgrade upon checking in and the room was spacious, well apointed, very clean and we appreciated the fee wi-fi. During our stay my husband had a serious bout with vertigo and the staff went out of their way to help us. He ended up going to the hospital and the front desk and concierge went out of their way to help us. The woman from room service, the cleaning woman and even the hostess at the restaurant where I had gone to get a glass of juice for him were not only helpful but kind and thoughtful - traits not always seen these days when staying in hotels. They even asked him the next day how he was feeling, truly personal service for which we were very grateful. We will definitely stay here again if we are in York.

Lovely hotel and good parking but room very small and stuffy. Very little room for clothes storage. Great en suite though.

Historic Hotel Close to the Rail Station

Posted 15-May-2016
Pros: We liked the convenience to the rail station and Old York. We also appreciated the cleanliness, especially of the bathroom.
Cons: Perhaps something could be done to improve the adjustment of water temperature in the bath. A few small drawers would help with unpacking.
Location: This is the perfect location if one comes by train and is close to all the sights of Old York. It is also right across from the Rail Museum.
We chose this hotel because it is historic and because we were coming by rail and could get to the hotel dragging our luggage. It is also a ten minute walk to the gates to Old York. We were in the newer annex area. The bathroom area was spotless and meticulously clean. We liked the fact that we had a comfortable place to sit. The only thing lacking was a dresser with drawers so that we could put away clothes for the 8 days we were there. The Refectory restaurant was very elegant and had delicious food even though the menu was somewhat restricted. The breakfasts were extensive but a little expensive. There were several nice lobby areas to sit and read or visit. Our main problem was getting the bathtub plumbing to adjust between hot and cold to get the correct temperature. We wondered if neighboring rooms use of water effected the temperature. At times the water pressure was also a little low.

Had an enjoyable stay at hotel, right up to the morning we were checking out and I had my iPad stolen from my room. If you stay on top two floors they do have CCTV. Also the door card reader records conveniently were wiped for the period we were at breakfast when it was taken. So lock up all your valuables if you choose to stay here.

Beautiful Hotel close to the City

Posted 29-Apr-2016
Pros: It was full of character and very close to the City Centre
Cons: Breakfast was chaotic
Our first room was large and well appointed - sadly it was VERY close to the main railway station and the vibration caused by the passing trains was horrendous. The bathroom was beautiful but the water temperature fluctuated between extremes making showering an unpleasant experience. Our concerns though were dealt with swiftly and we were "upgraded" to a tiny room on the third floor.

Adjacent to the station and 10 minute walk to town

Posted 24-Apr-2016
Pros: Everything, attention to detail, great service, friendly and helpful staff.
Location: Next to the railway station, 10 minute walk to town.
Weekend stay for a birthday celebration. Hotel had just been refurbished and was splendid. Clean, bright interiors, friendly, approachable staff, and I cannot thank the concierge staff enough, so friendly and helpful. I had booked deluxe bedrooms and it was well worth the extra cost. Hoping to go back soon. Have already recommended to some friends, and hope to arrange a meet up there soon.
