Leisure trip to York

Posted 26-Aug-2015
Pros: Leisure facilities
Cons: The room we stayed in could have had better lighting, especially at the desk. Additional storage or hooks in the bathroom to hang used towels.
Location: Visit York, walk the walls, see the NRM and cruise the river. See the Minster and climb to the top for brilliant views of Yorkshire. Plus much more.
The hotel was easy to find as it next door to York Railway Station. We experienced a short wait at the Reception Desk, however, the booking in process was fast and efficient. We took the lift to the third floor to our room, but I found it to be smaller than the illustrations would have lead you to believe. That said, the bathroom facilities with the "rain fall" shower were larger than expected. Views from the bedroom window are of the Railway Station roof, so nothing to say about this really. Access to the leisure facilities is hard work, as the current building work makes it so. Whilst using the leisure facilities, an unusual amount of rain fall outside caused a flooding issue which unfortunately cut short our use of the pool, etc. I can't comment on the dinning experience or breakfast, as we took a short walk into York for food. Whilst this hotel is being improved, it is a bit hard to judge it fairly so we'll have to wait for another day...

Good location

Charming Victorian hotel with refurbished room and upgrade which is always nice. Good standards throughout but you can see where other refurbishment is needed. Close to city centre and excellent for trains. I would stay again. Good value if booked in advance. Very useful car park

Old hotel being refurbished

Posted 16-Aug-2015
Pros: Good quality linen, towels and fittings. Nice staff.
Cons: More honesty about the room limitations would help!
Location: Excellent location for all the major York attractions
I booked a "superior" double room. The room had been recently refurbished; the furniture and fittings were new but there was not a single drawer in it or the bathroom. Luckily we had very little luggage, at the time, so it was not a major problem. Had we been international travellers with lots of luggage the basic nature of the furnishing would have been a significant issue. The bathroom was tiny; a large, beautifully finished shower cubicle took up half the available space leaving hardly any other space for toilet and hand basin. My wife and I are quite small, but even we could not use the facilities at the same time. The lack of space and drawers compounded the feeling of being short changed having paid extra for a superior room, as did the location of the room - it had no outlook other than the ongoing refurbishment work which started early each morning.

Great service and the accommodation was as good as expected, only fault was the heat. The hotel room was absolutely boiling, but nothing I could do about it.

York

Posted 10-Aug-2015
Pros: Location was excellent, very clean and staff very helpful
Cons: Staff in dining room to be more attentive to customer's empty plates
Location: very close to all main attractions and city centre right next to Railway station
Staff very friendly and helpful. Room very comfortable with small fridge and bottled water which was a nice surprise. My only complaint was at breakfast when staff didn't clear empty plates away so had to stack them on window sill so that we had room for our bowl of fresh fruit salad. Had to try to catch attention of waiting staff for more tea/coffee and still didn't remove empty plates. Dining room wasn't busy at the time so no excuses. Apart from that everything was lovely and would book again when in York. The gardens were beautiful and the hotel was very near all attractions.

surprise 50th

Posted 09-Aug-2015
Pros: the grandeur of the place, stunning architecture, cleanliness of the rooms, lovely pleasant staff
Cons: improvements are already taking place having spoken to staff they are planning to reinstate it close to its original style that a good move in my book
Location: 10 mins walk to local pubs, restaurants, river ouse,York minster, various museums, shopping, ghost trail, various café's, surrounded by a great wall.
upon entering the car park i was slightly disappointed to notice building work in progress while I wont moan too much about this as I'am the same business some kind of notice would have been appreciated purely because I have paid for a two day break with my wife to get away from this.Moaning aside it was a great surprise for my wife's best friend who didn't know that we were turning up for her 50th birthday.Later that evening 14 of us had a meal at the hotel because of the building work there were only two choices on a set menu, although we found out later off the birthday girl husband that this was explained to him before hand my wife and I didn't think that the meal was up to scratch and wasn't worthy of a price of £25 per person. However the breakfast which was served to a lot more people was outstanding.I also believe that if you are a paying guest as in staying overnight car parking should be FREE

The hotel looks like the very nice "English country house" of a famous tv series of ITV. Unfortunately some works are on near front desk, the pool access, etc. One morning we were evacuated because a fire alarm. The rooms are good but some details make them look quite basic. Some rooms are away from the front desk, then is necessary to walk a bit. Anyway is a good hotel, and probably is going to be better in the near future.

Perfect hotel for our vacation

Posted 23-Jul-2015
Cons: The use of the room key to turn on/off the electricity in the room was something new to us. Also, the toilet did not flush properly.
When we arrived we were surprised to find a spacious room that was nicely decorated. The location of the hotel was perfect for our trip. It is only a few steps from the train station and within walking distance of most of the attractions in York.

A complete wreck of a hotel

Posted 14-Jul-2015
The hotel is being renovated. It very old and filthy. Every thing is in temporary state. Food lousy. Do not waste your money. Big miss is advisable.
