Narpes Travel Guide

Tourist Guide
Take a holiday on the west coast of Finland, home to flat, expansive landscapes and fun events whatever the season!

Närpiö is full of life in the summer and winter. There are special events for every season and the area contains several attractions open all year round, ranging from historic churches and charming fishing villages to the Gåshällan nature station and the Vargberget outdoor activity centre. On your holiday in Närpiö, you can also make a day trip to Kaskinen, Finland's smallest municipality in terms of population. Kaskinen is entirely surrounded by Närpiö and is home to Finland's largest fishing harbour – well worth a visit.

The Ostrobothnian spring is always beautiful to behold when nature reawakens and a gentle green colour sweeps the last traces of winter from the flat, barren landscape. Although the many beaches in the area are not quite ready to welcome bathers, the nature trails are already open – what could be better than a hiking tour culminating in a barbecue on the shores of the forest lake in Risnäs? In March you can also visit Kvinna & Co events, where visitors are treated to fashion shows, lectures and good food.

One highlight of a summer holiday in Närpiö is the tomato carnival, which, despite its name, offers much more than just round red vegetables. During the carnival, the main street in Närpiö is closed to traffic and the town fills up with carnival floats, market stalls and, naturally, the world's longest tomato table. Come and shop for fresh vegetables, taste some delicacies, watch dance and music performances, and have fun on your holiday in Närpiö!

Winter is a magical time in Närpiö when the snow covers the landscape and a peaceful winter quiet descends on the region. However, if you go on holiday in Närpiö in the winter, you will not need to sit around in your cottage all day – unless you want to. Bring your skis and go on a cross-country skiing route along illuminated skiing tracks in Vargberget. The safe, well maintained cross-country skiing tracks are marked with yellow and red lights so you will not get lost in the dark. You can also begin the countdown to Christmas and visit the Christmas season opening ceremony arranged at the end of November in Närpiö.

Närpiö is located in Ostrobothnia in western Finland, about 250 miles north of Helsinki and 50 miles south of Vaasa. Until 2015, it was Finland's last monolingual Swedish-speaking municipality. Although Närpiö adopted Finnish as its second official language at the beginning of 2016, more than 80% of the residents have Swedish as their mother tongue. You can get to hear the unique dialect of Swedish on your holiday in Närpiö by visiting Närpiö theatre, where the performances are always in Närpiö Swedish.

Heed the call of the low-lying lands and come to Närpiö on holiday!
