La rivière l'Erdre, affluent de la Loire, semble stoppée dans sa course à cet endroit, elle a en fait été déviée entre 1929 et 1934 par un tunnel souterrain non visible sur la photo mais qui est proche de ce lieu. Le cours des 50 otages a été construit à l'emplacement de son ancien lit et constitue une voie de circulation importante pour la ville. Le monument aux morts visible sur la photo est dédié aux 50 otages fusillés par l'armée allemande en représailles à l'assassinat d'un officier allemand en 1941.
