This marine park is a natural wonderland dotted with islands covered in tropical rainforests, untouched beaches and secret caves.

It is hard to find a more picturesque area in the world than Ang Thong National Marine Park. The archipelago consists of 42 limestone monoliths, rising as high as 1,300 feet (400 meters) above the sea. Covering over 25,000 acres (10,000 hectares), this group of islands is the definition of a tropical paradise. The sea surrounding the island teems with sea life, making snorkeling and scuba diving a must, and the tropical jungle rises high to offer spectacular views.

Snorkel off the perfectly formed beaches, or scuba dive in the coral reefs. Explore the entrances to caves carved out by the sea over millennia, or jump ashore and simply relax on the beach. The island of Koh Mae has a walking trail taking you to the top of the hill for an unforgettable photo opportunity. Much of the walk is on a wooden walkway however, you do need a moderate level of fitness to complete the climb.

Enjoy the beauty of Emerald Lake on Koh Mae. This saltwater lake is filled via an underground sea tunnel and is worth the hike—including a ladder climb—to get to. While swimming is not allowed in Emerald Lake, you’ll find a large beach on Koh Mae‘s outer shoreline. If you’re in need of a break, head to the park headquarters at Koh Wua Talab for a snack at the restaurant.

Boats from the mainland generally leave early morning from Koh Samui you’ll find operators working out of both the north and west coasts offering services at various prices and qualities. Options range from a slow ferry to the islands with a larger group of people, or private speedboat charters that build a schedule around what you want to do. Experiences will vary however, the more you spend, the more flexibility you will have.

Ang Thong National Marine Park is located about 18 miles (30 kilometers) northwest of Koh Samui. The park is sometimes closed during November and December due to monsoonal weather.
