Misionesis known for its incredible natural attractions, among them crashing waterfalls and vast nature parks. Discover a history that stretches back centuries to native tribes and religious missionaries, go swimming in pristine creeks and hike through lush rainforests.

One of the first tribes to live in the region was the Guarani and the Guarani language is still spoken by many Misiones residents today. Over the years, battles raged between Paraguay and Argentina over control of the region, but today Misiones is fully incorporated into Argentina.

Visit the UNESCO-listed Jesuit ruins in San Ignacio, one of many Jesuit missions that once sprung up in the region, giving it its modern-day name. Today, red-colored remnants are all that’s left of this once grand 17th-century complex.

Further north near the Paraná River lies the town of Montecarlo. Known as the province’s “capital of flowers,” Montecarlo is famed for its fresh blooms. Wander the orchid nurseries and inhale the gentle floral fragrances. Families will enjoy the aquarium, where you can learn about local species.

Take a tour from Misiones’ capital, Posadas, to the powerful Mocona Falls. Watch as the water spills over a gorge that runs along the edge of the Uruguay River. Stay at lovely cabins in the rainforest or continue your journey to the small city of El Soberbio for more accommodation options.

For even more outdoor adventure, view Iguazú Falls in Iguazú National Park. The powerful Iguazu River starts in Brazil and runs smoothly until it reaches a canyon called the Devil’s Throat, which creates a chain of cascades. Take a guided boat tour under the falls and walk the trails of the surrounding forest.

Misiones doesn’t have a dry season, so bring waterproof gear no matter what time of the year. Rent a car to explore the wide open roads and stunning views along Provincial Route 2.
