Meelup Beach is a wide, spacious stretch of sand lapped by calm transparent waters and equipped with facilities for a fun day out. Find shade under the branches of the trees that line the shore, take a dip in the sheltered waters and enjoy a feast cooked up on the beach’s public barbecues. Though Meelup Beach isn’t typically crowded, it’s still wise to arrive early to get a good spot on the sand, particularly if it’s a weekend or a day during school holidays Roll out your towel in the sandy centre and soak up the warm sun. Or, look for a shaded spot around the beach’s inland curve where the overhanging branches of tall jarrah trees shield you from the sun. Head to the public change rooms, which have toilets and showers, to put on your swimsuit. Then venture into the waters for a swim. Snorkeling is also popular both on the beach itself and at the nearby Castle Rock. Because of the beach’s setting behind Geographe Bay, the waters are generally calm and thus suitable for weaker swimmers. Look out to the water to spot bobbing yachts boats often drop anchor here so passengers can swim. Take a walk along one of the coastal paths that wind throughout Meelup Park. A gentle route suitable for families extends along the coast offering gorgeous ocean vistas. Follow the path in spring to see colourful wildflowers in bloom in the surrounding bushland. Back at the beach, light one of the gas barbecues, which are available for visitors to use. Enjoy lunch by the picnic tables or on the grass. If you happen to visit the beach in late winter or spring, look out at the sea for whales, which can often be spotted breaching the waves during their coastal migration. Find Meelup Beach in Meelup Park, about a 10-minute drive from Dunsborough. It’s also possible to cycle to Meelup Beach from Dunsborough. (820 reviews) I know the desired "vibe" is that of a cozy, quaint accommodation, but I would rather have less cozy and more comfort and convenience. There's no mini fridge, and our room had only one chair. There was only a bar along the wall to hang clothes. The bathroom was quite large. I'd rather have less bathroom and more room. An upgrade was suggested at check-in for a room with a balcony, but as I saw from the outside, the balconies were tiny and IMO not worth the extra $. I have stayed in many hotels and motels, and I have never been charged for a continental breakfast. For $20+, the charge seemed way out of line - especially for such a limited selection. Having said all that, I really liked the sitting/lounge area. The access to a variety of complimentary beverages was much appreciated. The staff were very pleasant, and the location is very convenient for transportation and eats. It's a short walk to the CBD. As much as it seems I have complained, we did enjoy our stay. Still though, it wouldn't take much to make it an exceptional hotel. Make the rooms more accommodating - add a chair. Add a minifridge. Put in an armoire. Provide a complimentary continental breakfast. Really... those are little things that would make a big difference. (369 reviews) GUS Premium Room on 4th floor of the modern Garde Hotel. Very comfortable, spacious room with large bathroom. Room 414 faced west, so avoided any noise from Freo Social Music venue next door. No noise heard from other guest rooms. King size bed, next to the picture window. I would not recommend this room layout for anyone with mobility issues or poor flexibility - you either have to clamber over your partner or manoeuver around end of bed to get out! No problem for us though. Design is minimalist. There is a hanging rail instead of a wardrobe, and a large single drawer that requires bending over to reach. Free one-off mini bar included in room price, and a welcome drink between 4 - 7pm in Anglesea's bar. Tea & Coffee (pod & instant) available in room. There are complimentary water carafes that you can refill with still or sparkling water in each corridor - great idea, particularly if you're going out for the day! The bathroom is excellent. Rainfall shower (no showercap in room - ask at reception). Deep bath for soaking in, etc, etc The breakfast is continental - fresh fruit, granola, pastries. Gluten free choices available. Cooked breakfast available, but we were too full! Overall, a delightful stay - we will be back.
