Matsuyama

Glass-melding and Buddhist shrines set the stage for old-world Japan, while steaming hot springs used by the imperial family create an otherworldly setting.

As the capital city of the Ehime Prefecture, Matsuyama is a centre of culture, tradition and innovation. It is known across the world for having some of the oldest hot springs in Japan. Explore the fascinating temples and castles that have survived several dynasties in this historic hub.

Ascend a leafy hillside via the Matsuyama Castle Ropeway, which provides excellent views of the city and the scenic surrounding Shiroyama Park grounds. Once at the top, you’ll be surrounded by the light pink hues of cherry blossom trees in spring. Push past the petals to reach the 19th-century Matsuyama Castle. The first castle was built here in 1602.

The city’s best-known spa is the Dogo Onsen, which lies in the Dogo Hot Spring district. Luxuriate in the historic pools of hot water and follow in the footsteps of the former imperial family.

Outside, walk down the old avenues and spot the iconic Botchan Karakuri Clock. It sets up the scenes and characters for the Botchan novel that speaks to local hearts. Continue learning about the area’s customs at the Dogo Giyaman Glass Museum. Find out about glass-blowing and inspect the cute animal sculptures made here.

Wander through the port and fish market of the Mitsuhama Old Area and enjoy the views of the Seto Inland Sea. The market contains rows of buildings from centuries ago. Head to the Shiki Memorial Museum for a replica of a famous poet’s house and visit the Ishiteji Temple compound that is part of the Shikoku pilgrimage circuit.

Matsuyama is the largest city in the Shikoku region, in its northwestern corner. Get a flight to the Matsuyama Airport and take a 30-minute train ride to the city centre. You can also drive across a bridge from Hiroshima, 50 miles (80 kilometres) to the north. Once here, traverse the city via its impressive trams, metros and buses.

Bubbling hot springs and traditional architecture make Matsuyama a treat for your eyes and relaxing getaway location.
