"Beautiful and quiet. The chef is amazing and our dinner was delicious. The manager/waiter was not so pleasant. I think it may have been a language barrier issue as we don’t speak Italian and he doesn’t speak English and he didn’t have much patience for translating. We also found the men who checked us in were not very welcoming. For such a beautiful hotel the front desk people should be much more welcoming. My guess is they were filling in for the regular person. Other than that, we enjoyed our...

"Breakfast was poor: one egg, bread with butter, croissant. Coffee - only espresso. Or not good tea.
We asked for 2 eggs for each, got it without objection. "

"It may not be a surprise to most, but we booked this hotel specifically because of the underground pool. We were very excited to use it. However, we then realized our teenage sons couldn't use it (18+ only) and it also costs and additional 25,00 a person to use.
I don't blame the company as everything is in the fine print and we just didn't see it.
But make sure if you're a family you know these things."
"Matera is an extraordinary destination and an absolute must-visit. The ancient cave city is breathtaking both during the day and when beautifully illuminated at night, creating one of the most memorable places we’ve ever visited.
Aquatio Cave Luxury Hotel & Spa is a unique place to stay and perfectly captures the character of this remarkable UNESCO World Heritage city. Check-in was warm and efficient, and the staff were friendly and welcoming throughout our stay.
Our room was beautifully designed to retain the authentic feel of a traditional cave while offering all the modern comforts and amenities. Although the room was a little compact, it was spotless, well equipped and featured a lovely terrace with an incredible view across Matera.
Breakfast was excellent, with a wide variety of fresh, high-quality options. The cave spa was another highlight, with its atmospheric pool, sauna and steam room providing the perfect place to relax after a day of exploring.
There were a couple of areas where the experience could be improved. The air conditioning struggled to keep up during our stay when temperatures reached around 38°C. Also, while we completely understand that cars are not permitted within the historic centre, transporting luggage to and from the hotel was quite challenging over the uneven streets. A hotel-operated luggage shuttle, such as a small electric buggy or tuk-tuk, would be a fantastic addition and would make arrivals and departures much easier"
"Loved everything about this magical little hotel in the caves of matera. My only complaint is that the locals of matera seem to hate tourists, very rude. One guy even told us all tourists are not welcome. Very sad bc it seems tourism would be one of the main drivers of the economy there. I read the book by Carlo Levi and it seems there was pure poverty until a few decades ago. Very sad but beautiful town."
"The hotel is a gem in Matera. The rooms are tastefully decorated with all the modern amenities. The breakfast was delicious with high quality ingredients; do try the olive oil as it is exceptional!!! The spa is another level. Throughout our stay the hotel provided service rarely seen nowadays. I applaud the team at Vetera Matera for their exceptional service. Thank you and we will definitely return."
