What an amazing property! (This review is based solely on the hogan. We did not use the bunkhouse)This is a rustic yet sturdy building, unlike the yurt-feel I was expecting. It has a really good feel to it. Clean for high desert. So many windows with great views! Cozy yet spacious enough for our family of 3. My husband, our adult son with disabilities, and I quickly settled into the space. Everything is so well appointed. Furnishings fit both utility and style. Well stocked. Plenty of outlets. The views are stunning, especially the sunrise over the mountains. The night sky here is magnificent! I highly recommend spending some time in the chairs on the porch. The king bed is high quality, firm yet soft top. The comfy couch was a very landing spot after exploring each day. Kitchen is intuitive with great appliances. The bathroom is small but not cramped. Single shower stall with great water pressure. Toilet with bidet was a bonus. There is a step down (approx 2-3" high) from both entrances as well as a slight step up (approx 1" high) to the area where the king size bed is. Our son who walks on his knees when not using his wheelchair was able to navigate these easily.Excellent communication, easy check-in, peaceful, overall an easy stay. Great for off-roading, ghost towns, secluded retreat, VLA, wildlife. If it were my place: Longer curtains in a soft rust color, more pillows, allergen covers on pillows, replace couch pillows, fix deadbolts to operate more easily.
This location is set against a beautiful landscape. The porch and large windows are clearly meant to showcase the view, and when everything is clean I'm sure it would be a relaxing location. But during our 3-day stay, we were met with a large amount of bird droppings covering the porch and outdoor furniture. Inside, the windows were very dirty, ruining the view from there as well. The main bed was another drawback. The mattress is quite worn, with noticeable sagging. We did not get a single good night’s sleep during our stay. The layout is essentially one large octagonal room with no walls except for a very small bathroom. The bathroom itself is tight, with a very small shower, though there was plenty of hot water. The floor is uneven, with a raised section around the bed and elevated entry areas that create trip hazards. This would not be suitable for anyone with mobility issues. Outside is all dirt and gravel, which would become muddy in wet weather. On the bright side, the host was very responsive via the VRBO messaging app. I'm hoping these issues were simply overlooked items she wasn't aware of and will be taken care of promptly. If these issues are taken care of, we will undoubtedly have a very different experience the next time we visit the area.Overall, this is a unique property with a great setting, but I feel I have a duty to other guests to be honest and for us, it fell short of a 5 star rating.
Staying at the Hogan for two nights exceeded all my expectations. It is even better than how it is described on vrbo. It was peaceful and private, had spectacular surround-around views, was artistically decorated with an attention to detail, VERY comfy bed with a wide selecting of pillow types.... nice wood burning stove, amazing stars in the night sky without light pollution, and windows in 7 of the 8 sides of this lovely octagonal house.
I was in Magdalena to visit the VLA, for a podcast I do called the Star River Podcast. It's all our about connection across space and time with everybody who has ever looked up at the night sky or ever will. There is no better place than Magdalena to see that night sky, and there is no better place than the Hogan to have stayed in Magdalena. 360 views of pristine dark night skies was the highlight of my trip. In addition to that the space itself was wonderful, I wanted for nothing, and the host was not only responsive but flexible and helpful. I will come back again.
Beautiful location perfect for a couple nights under the stars. Susan has thought of everything here. The house was well stocked and even had some pantry food items that came in clutch for me. I can’t wait to come here again soon!
