Maderuelo, in the north of the province of Segovia, is one of those places where time seems to have stopped long ago. With just a hundred inhabitants, this medieval town captivates everyone who sets foot in it for its Romanesque architecture and its natural environment. Do you want to be enchanted too?
One of its main buildings is the Church of Santa María del Castillo, which is believed to have been part of the village's pre-11th century defences. You will soon realise that its predominant architectural style is Romanesque. The height of the central nave will also catch your eye.
The church is in the Plaza de Santa María Square, which separates Maderuelo's two main streets: Calle Arriba and Calle Abajo – Upper Street and Lower Street. The Plaza de San Miguel is also worth a visit, both for its late-Romanesque church and for the arch of the wall with its fortified gate from the 15th century. Other outstanding architectural elements are the old Bridge of Roman origin that united the town with the Veracruz Hermitage and the Castle Tower, one of the last vestiges of the fortress that protected Maderuelo from attack from the north.
Maderuelo holiday packages are also ideal for lovers of hiking and nature, as they can visit the beautiful Hoces del Río Riaza natural park. In its almost 25 square miles you can see vultures and other birds of prey. In the months of July and August, you can swim in the River Riaza and enjoy water sports such as canoeing.
Maderuelo is just 80 miles north of Madrid-Barajas airport. Although there is a bus that serves the province of Segovia that passes through Maderuelo, the schedules are very limited, so the best thing is to come in your own vehicle or rent one.
