The property is a beautiful old mansion with the characteristics of older buildings - charm, character, no electrical outlets to charge phones, vintage furniture including a SMALL very hard single bed, and way too many stairs. The staff were wonderful and accommodating, but the physical properties of the hotel made my stay difficult.

Nice small hotel in the 'country house' style --helpful and pleasent staff . Food limited in range both at breakfast and evening meal but otherwise good, but many restaurants nearby. This hotel is more 3 star than 4 but it does have its charm !.

Good Location close to town with parking
The hotel has nice views over the town and sea, the staff were helpful and attentive. It being February, we didn't try the unheated pool but it would be fine in summer. Breakfast was plentiful if a little repetitive, Rooms were clean and well serviced. All together I'd give it about 7.5/10

pleasant stay
I was happy with both the location and the cost of the room. The room was very clean and tidy. The staff were very helpful and friendly. The only negative points I could find is that the Wi Fi was only available in the lobby. Which was very annoying . The facilities in the room were very basic. which reflects the cost of the room. There was no kettle and I had a small TV From the 90's which didn't work properly. Apart from these minor issues I was happy

Hotel nicely exploring Funchal
First night hotel over booked so was placed in sister hotel in downtown Funchal for one night. Hotel not too big an as is an old mansion house within 30 minutes walk of Funchal and Lido in the other direction, with many restraunts in easy reach. On my birthday then left us a free bottle of Bubbly in the room - a lovely surprise. Breakfast was good with pleanty of fresh fruit, yogourt, and a variety of breads and cake. The staff were always helpful.

NO ROOM AT THE INN
Received email on 9th April confirming I had 2 rooms booked. Told hotel one had been cancelled in January and they eventually agreed this was correct, said they had not received confirmation email from expedia. I had so i sent it to them. They confirmed this on 10th April. On 14th April I received an email that hotel was fully booked and transferred me to a sister hotel. Had several phone calls with reception very polite but could not tell me how I had gone from 2 rooms to 0 rooms in 4 days. Other hotel very nice but a considerable distance away with no restuarants nearby so we had to eat in the hotel restuarant. Very good and very expensive. We had chosen the Perestrello mainly for location as we know the area and had booked into a nearby restuarant. We only wanted a room for one night and a simple meal as we did not arrive until late evening. All in all somewhat upsetting, bit of a shambles really.

heritage but surrounded by big hotels
The hotel is small and half of it old and quaint but Ffunchal is a city of hotels and other places to stay so not very exclusive. The maon round runs next to the hotel so always noisy but easy access to the town and transport for trips around the island.

No room on arrival after being books for 6 months!
When we arrived after a flight from Canada, we were told that they were overbooked and we did not have a room. They did transfer us to the beautiful Quinta do Monte...not as convenient but a lovely hotel. It appears that the Quinta Perestrella has this problem fairly often from the comments and there was another couple that arrived after us that we're also transferred to another hotel. This is very concerning, but we were well compensated at the Quinta do Monte.

Small, oldie worldie hotel with a personal feeling
I think the hotel had double booked the day we arrived in Funchal. They emailed me one day before we travelled to say they were putting us in The Girasoll down the road. The room there was awful! Shabby and unpleasant, although it was clean. our room in the Perestrello was nice with a pleasant balcony. We spent two days in The Girasoll. The breakfast and the pool area were very good there. There were plenty of sun beds and an efficient bar near the pool. Whereas The Perestrello has a very small pool where sunbeds are often all occupied by towels rather than people!!

Would return, lovely quinta in convenient position
Overall, a very pleasant place to stay which could easily be improved but nothing detracted from our enjoyment of the visit. The cosmetic improvements needed might even diminish the 'shabby chic' feel of the place. Everything about it (apart from the pillows perhaps) was ideal for us as we prefer small unpretentious hotels especially without the inflated prices that 'boutique' hotels charge. The staff couldn't have been more helpful. Although only a 15 minute walk to the harbour and 20 mins to the old town, the busses made trips convenient (5 minutes and cooler on a hot day). Onward travel to all areas of the island for sightseeing and walking was easy. Altogether it was a wonderful first visit to Madeira. We would definitely recommend the island and the hotel to friends. Thanks to the staff and best wishes for the future.

Nice little friendly hotel
Nice hotel with all the facilities you need. We had a ground floor room by the small swimming pool which was ideal. Much nicer than the enormous bland anomimous hotel. Good location. 30 minute strioll downhill to old town with gardens on the way. Euro 1.95 bus back up the hill. Plenty of places to eat nearby.

Hotel 'forgot my reservation' or some such excuse
Hotel forgot/lost my reservation and moved me to a much worse hotel within their group with a much worse location. Basically they were overbooked at this hotel so contacted me 1 day before and moved me to a hotel within their group that had plenty of space, and even then Expedia put their address in the subject header so I had to spot and correct it myself to get confirmation). Frantic last minute and stressful. No time to look for other hotels. At checkin hotel still didn't have correct details and only had one room when we booked two. New hotel also had a distressed captured swan which couldn't leave pen -cruel. No refund or part refund offered. Had to walk uphill without a pavement at the new hotel. Very disappointed with Expedia and this hotel. Dont trust them with your booking. Book at a different hotel.

A nice hotel in a quiet location
After a bit of walk up the fairly narrow, fairly steep path we were made welcome. This was most appreciated after a three hour delay in arrival, after our landing was "discontinued" and being diverted to the Canary Islands to refuel and wait for a gap in the weather. The staff were most friendly and helpful. The only criticism is that the hotel bar prices are a bit higher than those in nearby bars & restaurants.

My partner and I had a lovely 4 night stay at this hotel in October 2015. The location is good and having a pool (albeit a bit on the small side) is a real bonus. The buffet breakfast was great and the staff were very helpful. There is free wifi but only in the hotel lobby....shame it isn't offered in the rooms but apart from that all was very good.

Cool calm and collected atmosphere; staff attitudes professional. Mostly mature clientelle. Good facilities with nearby access to buses, and ideally placed with good views from the dining conservatory/balcony. Outdoor pool refreshing. All spotlessly clean. We really enjoyed our stay and will return.

Small, Clean & Friendly
There are 4 hotels in the chain. This was our first visit to Maderia and we found the accomodation clean, quiet and comfortable. Staff were nice and friendly and the breakfast was good. Air conditioning stays on when you go out (despite removing the card key) which gives a nice cool room to return to. Pool is small and can be a little busy high season. Not too far out from the town centre (took us about a 20 minute walk each way). In all very good indeed. Recommended for a nice stay.

Small hotel with excellent service
We stayed here for two weeks. The hotel is located near to the centre of town - about 15 minutes walk and there are a number of excellent local restaurants within about five minutes walk for an evening meal. We went to a different one every evening. The staff at the hotel were very friendly and nothing was too much trouble. There is a nice swimming pool with loungers around, which we used everyday and the hotel provided extra towels. Breakfast was included in the price and there was plenty to choose from, including hot food. During the day there was a snack menu available, the cheese and tomato toasts were excellent. In the evenings it was nice to sit on the terrace where drinks and snacks were served as required. We used the laundry service and clothes came back neatly ironed. Our room was air conditioned, which was excellent as it was very hot and humid during our stay. The room was nicely furnished with a slightly old fashioned/traditional feel which fitted nicely with the theme of the hotel which used to be a merchants house. There are only thirty six rooms in the hotel which allowed for a personal and friendly service. There is a sister hotel on the island at Monte, and we stopped off here for lunch, the service was just as good. This hotel also had a spa, which we could have used but didn't take advantage of it. The group of hotels that it was part of is the Charming Hotel group, and it most certainly was 'Charming'. We would certainly return to stay here.

Comfortable and homely hotel
I stayed here with my daughter for four nights - it provided us with a comfortable base for our first visit to Madeira. It was conveniently situated although the main road might bother some people. It had a pleasant ambience and the staff were always willing to help answer any enquiries. We stayed in a room with a veranda which enabled us to enjoy both the early morning sun and the pleasant evening ambience. The hotel had a shabby chic atmosphere although the bathroom did need a little attention. There always seemed to be plenty of hot water available and I cannot fault the cleanliness of the room. I would certainly consider staying here again in the future.

Quinta Perestrello
The hotel is an old house with a modern (60's?) wing to one side. It is set in a garden with an unheated swimming pool which we did not use as it was too cold. It was kept very clean but could do with some updating. It fronted onto a main road so there was some traffic noise. The mattresses were a bit hard and the pillows not good. The breakfast which was included in the price was very good and varied to suit all tastes. The staff were friendly and helpful and all spoke good English. Checking in early was not a problem - our flight arrived in Madeira at about 11:00. We greatly enjoyed our stay at the Quinta Perestrello.

Lovely, traditional, friendly hotel
If you are looking for a hotel that is different from the large, soulless blocks, then this is the one for you. 36 rooms in a delightful garden setting, close to shops and local restaurants. The staff are very friendly and always on hand to offer help and advice on the area. The rooms are furnished in traditional Madeira style and it is easy to relax in them. We enjoyed our breakfasts on the terrace and our drink in the small hotel bar before bed.

Small, friendly, well positioned comfortable hotel
We'd been here before so knew what to expect and were not disappointed. Warmly welcomed and shown to our room hours before official 'Check-in', we were next door to last years room in the newer part of the hotel with a balcony, which we had requested and paid for. Not a huge room - the ones in the older part of the building are quite a bit larger but without a balcony. One of our joys is to sit outside for a while and soak up Funchal, the surrounding mountains and the sea. The hotel has plenty of sitiingout facilities but they don't have the views you get on the third (top) floor. Rooms are always clean and well serviced - wish the beds were a little softer, but thats a personal choice - they are by no means uncomfortable. Shower over the bath functions well and there is always hot water! Breakfasts (buffet) are fine, unless you are expecting the full english - plenty to choose from and all fresh. Breakfast outside in February is one reason to go to Madeira. Staff are all great - friendly and helpful. They do other meals but we prefer to roam Funchal for the atmosphere and street life so we've never eaten in the hotel in the evening. Pool and sunbeds available in the attractive gardens and in use in February. The Perestrello suits us. We prefer small hotels and their relative quietness. It's well placed for buses into Funchal, although its only a 15 minute walk, and with a choice of resteraunts within 5-10 minutes stroll. Can't imagine staying elsewhere in Madeira.
