Visit Lulea – where islands, culture and history awaits
The city of Lulea in northern Sweden is perhaps not where you would expect to find a sunny island paradise. A frozen wonderland in winter, it is in summer the Lulea Archipelago really comes alive. Set sail amongst the over 1,300 picturesque islands on an organised boat tour. For many years running this town has been crowned the sunniest city in Sweden, and it was even the initiative of Lulea council to create a trophy for this contest. This gorgeous northerly town also boasts a marvellous cultural and entertainment scene and fantastic shopping.
Visit the Old Church Village in Lulea Old Town, a UNESCO world heritage site. In the olden days the distance between the homes in northern Sweden were so great that the farmers built little huts close to the church to stay the night when they went to mass, markets and councils. Admire the quaint red wooden huts surrounding the beautiful medieval church from 1492. Study the fascinating historical exhibits in the Museum of Norbotten in central Lulea before you head out to do some shopping in the malls Smedjan and Shopping.
Lulea is famous for its many entertaining festivals. Enjoy Lulea Harbour Festival, which is held every summer and consists of concerts, fun fairs, food stalls and plenty of happy, partying locals. Other annual music events include Musikens Makt (the power of music) and Minus 30.
Prepare yourself for a totally unique experience in winter and visit Ice Music in the igloo known as Ice Concert Hall in the centre of Lulea. The concert hall has a constant temperature of minus 5 degrees, which is required as all the instruments are made of ice. Marvel at ice violins, ice xylophones, ice cellos and ice guitars.
