Great location, magnificent view from rooftop bar and the square right in front of the hotel, friendly staff, clean and soundproof. While the hotel keeps historical features, the carpet is outdated, the vanity is too tiny and squeezed in the corner.

The good: This hostel has preserved some of the grand architectural details from its former life, lending it a lot of charm. The included breakfast was good. The staff were nice, and it was clean. The small plaza across the street from the hostel has gorgeous views of Lisbon. For the less-good: I was in a dorm room, and they really ought to add privacy curtains to the bunks. When you have 8 people coming and going, a curtain really makes it more private and cuts down on the light pollution. Also, I arrived quite early in the morning, and while they were able to stow my luggage, they wouldn’t allow me to use the shower until after check-in. Guys, it’s a communal shower accessed from the hallway - I wouldn’t have to go into anyone’s room, I wouldn’t be creating extra work for anyone, I’m staying at yourhostel for several days, you have my ID and credit card… just let me wash the plane grease off, ok? What’s the issue?

Welcoming, clean, great vibes, location, transportation easy. Party district. Bunk/shared room = coming and going at ALL hours. Take earplugs and eyemask a lock to secure posessions in an ample drawer (that fit all my carry on and personal things) Nice cozy spaces to journal. Spotty wifi, but free. Showers are ok, but cold fast! Wonderful breakfast included. 8-11am

The existence of a check in time is something that is inescapable in any accommodation business, as the teams need time between the check out time, which in our case is 12pm and the check in time (3pm). During this time our teams clean the hotel and the rooms in order for the next guest to have clean accommodations for their stay.Every time we can we will check in our guests before the guaranteed check in time, but unfortunately this is not always possible. In future cases like this one, where you know you will arrive very early, in case you want to guarantee a room or bed in the morning, you need to book it from the night before. That way the room/bed will be ready for you even if you arrive in the middle of the night. We hope to see you again next time you are in Lisbon! I was already excited for Lisbon because I really enjoyed it the brief moment I was there in February. I would’ve never thought just how amazing my time here would be. I owe a lot of that to the hostel staff here, who was friendly, welcoming, and great conversationalists. They were there to answer all questions, have a quick chat, and be a familiar face to talk to. On top of that, this was simply one of the most beautiful hostels I’ve been to in my one month vacation throughout Europe. The views were amazing from Bairro Alto, the decoration was carefully curated and thought out, and the lobby was breathtaking. My only qualms were small things, and they were already working on it, which was just a brief issue with the door to my floor, and whether or not there was going to be a light for the room. They were receptive to my concerns and transparent about working to fix the problems. All in all, this was my favorite hostel, and I’d recommend this place to friends in a heartbeat.

We liked the location of this hotel but if you have a car, parking can be an issue. If you look hard enough u can find free parking. We were put in a musty room with a ceiling literally leaking water on our stuff and the staff clearly didnt care. They did move our room, but despite us staying several nights at their hotel, they never had the manager get in touch with us nor dod they offer an upgrade. We probably won't stay here again.

Come for hostel experience!
The welcome drink was so refreshing and people who you meet during happy hour are quite friendly. This hostel host seniors and young children to my surprise! The restaurant food is excellent! And reasonably priced! Stayed 3 nights and the private suites are better because of privacy and noise. Highly recommended experience!

Artsy hotel in great location
Loved the overall ambiance and attention to design detail. It’s fabulous from an artistic standpoint and the location was perfect. There were a couple of not so great things however: there was mold in the shower, the restaurant floor was filthy and the service staff for breakfast were bordering rude. The reception and bellhop staff were terrific! Overall a 4 out of 5 stars.

Just back from a week at the Independente and what a beautiful place to stay. From the moment we arrived we were treated with a friendliness and warmth sadly missing in a lot of hotels. The hotel is divided between suites, and a hostel. We stayed in a basic suite, which was clean, comfortable and a perfect base to explore the city from. A breakfast buffet is served every morning with a choice of hot and cold food and the hotel has two restaurants if you want an evening meal. One of the restaurants (The Insolito located on the roof) has a stunning view across some of the older parts of the city and the riverTagus. The city centre is only a short walk from the hotel. It's a hilly place so if you prefer public transport there's a tram stop pretty much outside the front door One thing I've seen a lot of reviews mention is the level of street noise in the area. Yes it is very noisy, but it's hardly the hotels fault. Lisbon,and in particular Bairro Alto where the hotel is located, is a lively place, (particularly at night) and my advice would be to either go with the flow or invest in a good pair of earplugs. I can't recommend the Independente enough, it's a quirky place, reminiscent of a Wes Anderson film set, and we loved it. Muito obrigado Independente.

We had a pleasant stay at the hotel for 3 nights. Location is close to everything. The neighborhood is very busy in the evening. If your sensitive to noise, maybe consider other locations.

This hotel is in the BEST location. The building is beautiful. If you can get a room in the front of the building, top floor, you'll have a cute balcony that overlooks the square and has amazing views of alfama.

Staff here are attentive, kind and so helpful. The property is over 300 years old, the building is beautiful, the rooms, I had a private room with a terrace, gorgeous view . Airconditioned much a blessing as it was 33 C Hot hot hot. I will visit and be sure to stay there. Right in the heart of cafes, and restaurants- shopping as well. TY

Take earplugs as loud music is played in the downstairs bar. The bunk beds could be better - there was no shelf for personal items, and no privacy curtains, and you can feel when others move about. I’d previously stayed at Steel House hostel in Copenhagen where the bunk beds were so much better…

This was one of my favourite stays ever, mostly because of the vibe: a great mix between eclectic hippie with great taste and superb service. The food was creative and very good quality, e.g. the cucumber-lime coulis on vainilla ice cream with black pepper meringue. I ended up eating all my meals there. Fabulous choice. The location is the other huge plus for this hotel: walking distance to all the spots you def want to see in Lisbon. Can't wait to get back there.

I had a great stay in the hostel section of the hotel. It's a beautiful old building well located in the city up the hill from the metro. Keep in mind that there can be a bit of noise from the street and other guests so pack earplugs! Showers were hot and had soap, bathrooms were clean. The breakfast was absolutely amazing – I would visit again just for that! Overall would stay again.

Location was wonderful and the restaurant & rooftop bar were delicious & a fun experience. However, I did not have hot water while staying in my private room. I asked the receptionist what to do and they said to wait 15 mins and try again, so I did, but still no hot water. I went down to the receptionist again & he came up to my room and checked the hot water to make sure the settings were correct but confirmed the water was not hot. I had a flight the next morning at 6am and really needed to shower. It was very inconvenient and I still have not heard from the manager. Very disappointing.

Lovely old building with eclectic decor. Very clean and comfortable room (Superior Double Room). Front desk staff were very helpful and courteous. The restaurant in the hotel had fantastic food and service.

Chic, well-located hostel option
Very Chic and well decorated. The breakfast was amazing and the hostel was overall very nice. The location is right across from one of the best miradouros in all of Lisbon!
