Beatuiful outside, not so inviting inside

The outside grounds of this hotel are beautiful! The location is also very convenient. I found the staff to be extremely helpful and kind, though I don't know what their English speaking capabilities are since I speak Mandarin. However, the walls of the rooms are paper thin. I could hear every TV show, alarm, and conversation in the room next to me. Being in my room was not relaxing at all. The rooms also have no windows, which was very disappointing. I found the description of "each room has a balcony" to be very deceitful, as it is a shared porch and that circles the hotel and the only entrance to each room. Overall I was disappointed with the price of the room and what I got out of it.

Re-named hotel Chateau D'Act (Paraday Sun)

Good central loction next to Old Town but the rooms were shabby and best suited for backbackers rather than international travellers. Room damp and beds hard, Breakfast was probably the worst we have experienced for many years. Manager was helpful but we checked out after one day rather than the 3 booked. Best Avoided!!

It is all in the name

We had real difficulty finding this hotel, because it was not where it was marked on some of the maps and also because the name given for this hotel is not known to the locals. The actual name outside the hotel is "Chateau L'Act" which might explain why the hotel appear popular with French tourists, but to the locals it is know by something else, I suspect it was Guyou Hotel, after the road it is on. Which brings me to my second point, that the hotel is not located in the main square at the North side of the old town (near the water wheels), but exactly other opposite side of town the very south eastern tip. This does make it easier to access by taxi, most other hotels would require pulling your suitcase over cobbled streets, for a km or so and finding those hotels on foot in the dark with a suspect local made would be a nightmare. So although Chateau L'Art is on the fringe of the old town away from the main centre, it is at least easy to get to, provided the taxi driver , has the correct name and address. That said, the hotel was the best we had stayed in, beautifully decorated rooms, very clean and spacious. The design of the hotel is also very traditional which looks great on the internet and is a true impression of the hotel interior, but after a couple of days walking the local old streets, the hotel looks just like everywhere else. Everywhere in Lijiang is a problem when it comes to finding someone who speaks English, and this hotel was no different. However, submitting questions in writing got a typed personal response from someone on the staff, or you resort to borrowing someone's elses guide to translate, often via French. I speak a little Mandarin, and this helped, but you will struggle unless you speak Chinese or the hotel get staff that can speak more than a few basic phrases. The staff were however. very polite and as helpful as they could be, often working together to try and interpret my poor Chinese. The hotel was quite quiet out of high season, the breakfast room almost deserted, but you got the impression that it was a very popular and fun place to be in high season. The inner courtyard would be a great place to hang out in warmer weather.

A recommander absolument.

"Very Cozy"

The hotel was in a great location. The room was very nice but very small. The staff was great but very, very limited english. The western restaurant was not the best but better then some of the other places. The town is breathtaking! I would highly recommend going!

Great building; good location; interesting old town

The hotel's architecture is made up of a number of separate multicoloured Chinese styled buildings that are joined together. This is a very attractive alternative to the traditional multistorey concrete box. The inside of the rooms is similarly stylish. The size of the room is more than adequate and the bathroom is quite spacious. Unfortunately, the TV requires 3 separate controls to use (one on the panel and two separate remote controls). For me, the breakfast was "just adequate" from a western point of view. I ate dinner twice at the hotel's western restaurant; the duck (on the first night) was excellent while the set menu (on the second night) made me ill. The hotel's location is very good, being at the southern end of the old city. If you arrive at Lijiang by bus, the cost of a taxi to the hotel is cheap (less than RMB25). The level of English is not great but a good effort is made (it's better than my Chinese). The old town near the hotel is full of interesting shops and presents quite well at night (you're bound to get lost going through the old town, but it's very intersting). There is a supermarket on the other side of the road (from the hotel) but it's ok only for drinks and snacks. Be careful about any "promotions" offered by the hotel when you book because the hotel may have terminated some or all of these by the time you arrive (as happened to me). Overall, an enjoyable hotel experience in a good location with a great building.
