Langeland Travel Guide

Tourist Guide

Line of modern neo classical design wooden beach summer houses Langeland Denmark

Relax on beautiful beaches, rock on at the island’s popular music festival, or dive into the area’s exciting cold war history at Fortress Langeland.

Measuring in at 52 km long and 11 km wide, Langeland offers the obvious advantage that you are never far from the coast and a gorgeous beach. Its short distances also make this island the perfect place to explore by bicycle, on horseback or on foot. But no matter how you choose to get around, when you spend your holiday in Langeland, don’t miss a visit to the island’s very best beach, Ristinge Strand. Over 10 km long, this sandy beach features fine white sand and characteristic North Sea dunes that attract many enthusiastic swimmers come summer.

If the season (or the weather) won’t allow for swimming, you can climb Ristinge Cliff, which rises 20 metres above the sea and lures holidaymakers with a spectacular view. If the desire for an active holiday is what brought you to Langeland, the Ohavs Trail is a good place to start. This beautiful 220 km hike-and-bike trail winds through the South Funen archipelago, and on Langeland, the trail runs by the famous beech tree from the Danish national anthem.

Drop into the Fortress Langeland Cold War Museum if you want to delve deeper into the history of Denmark. The fort was built in 1953 as part of Denmark’s and Nato’s defense against incursions by hostile naval forces through the Langeland belt. Today, you can check out bunkers, canons and much more at the fortress. Little ones on holiday at Langeland can test out the children’s playground.

If you need a little contemporary comfort after visiting the old fortress, visit the historic market town of Rudkobing, a pure island idyll with cobbled streets, hollyhocks, old merchant houses and well-maintained half-timbered houses. The port city of Spodsbjerg is a small and picturesque fishing harbour, marina and a ferry port with connections to Lolland.

If you are short on time, you can easily make do with a weekend’s stay at Langeland. Despite the wonderful feeling of being far away from everyday life, it is actually easy and quick to get to Langeland. Take the train to Nyborg, where you can travel by bus to Langeland. You can also take the train to Nakskov and from there take a ferry from Taars to Spodsbjerg. You can also fly to Odense Airport and continue from there by train.

A trip to the island of Langeland is a ticket to a cosy, relaxing island holiday.
