See the Mask Temple, with its remarkable carvings of a toothy face amid bizarre patterns. Many Mayas were buried in these grounds. The site’s name comes from the Yucatec Mayan for “submerged crocodile,” in reference to the reptiles in the nearby river. The area was occupied as long ago as the 16th century B.C.
