Best Beach on the Keweenaw - Big Traverse Bay on Lake Superior
Located on the east side of the Keweenaw Peninsula, near Houghton and Calumet, this cabin offers panoramic views of Lake Superior and Big Traverse Bay. Often referred to as 'The Waikiki Beach of the Keweenaw Peninsula,' the pure white sand beach is more than 100’ deep and more than three miles long. This cabin's personal beach is over 200' wide with one immediate neighbor.
Year-round 26 x 28 Chalet-style lake house provides 180 degree view of Lake Superior, has central heating, full basement with laundry facilities, full bathroom with shower, and full kitchen. Recent updates include: new sauna, new flooring throughout first floor, tiled bathroom flooring with local Lake Superior pebbles, new twin bunk bed, and kitchen. Available April through early January. The house's lake side has a 16’ deep x 28' wide deck. Main floor has one bedroom (with bunk bed), bathroom with 5’ shower, and an open concept kitchen, dining, and family room. Family room has a woodburning stove. Interior is lined with Nordic White Spruce tongue and groove paneling imported from Scandinavia--providing a cozy ambiance. Upstairs has two bedrooms; one bedroom has a queen bed and one twin bed, and the large master bedroom has windows overlooking Lake Superior and includes a Queen-size bed. Lie in bed while watching the moon rise over the lake, or--if you're an early riser, watch the sunrise each morning. Basement is well-lit and dry--and has full laundry facilities with washer and dryer; plenty of room to store bikes, skis, etc.
The house is well stocked with amenities to accommodate families (Porta crib, high chair, stroller, toddler life preservers), couples, friends, or someone looking for quiet solitude. There are two kayaks, a SUP (stand up paddle board), and several bikes. The kitchen is fully stocked and is perfect for cooking gourmet meals or something quick and easy.
This property is uniquely situated with a panoramic view of Lake Superior out the front side and a view out the cabin’s backside toward a large wetlands area with lagoon (suitable for canoeing and kayaking) and lots of wildlife: common sitings of bald eagles, sand hill cranes, beaver, geese, ducks, and deer. Great blueberry picking in late summer/early fall on the property, nearby public parks and a pick-your-own blueberry farm just a few miles away. Superb fall colors make autumn a beautiful time to visit.
Woodburning sauna with large changing room, great views of Lake Superior (from within the sauna), and a front patio. Firewood is provided for sauna and for the woodburning stove in the cabin.
Beach is 100+ feet deep and 200 feet wide--providing ample room for almost any kind of beach activity, including volleyball (volleyball net available). Outdoor burn pit on beach, with surrounding benches. Gather around the fire, cook up s'mores, listen to the waves and wildlife. You'll feel that stress fade away.

We had a wonderful time at the cabin on the lake! We utilized the sauna, our dog had a blast playing around in the snow, we enjoyed waking up the sunrise and getting cozy around the wood burning fireplace downstairs. Lovely get away and will be sure to return! The host was also very communicative and helpful!
We loved property, its a great place to unwind and relax. The beachfront was amazing and we had blast, looking foward to spending more time there when we can.
The house was the perfect unplug get away. There was no TV so my husband I spent our nights playing cards and talking...so wonderful. The campers to the south were quiet and respectful and we took turns using the expansive shoreline with our pups.
Beautiful place in an amazing location! Great place for a base to go exploring around the peninsula, and to sit back and relax listening to the waves crash on the sandy beach. Awesome hosts, and will have to return at some point in the warmer months!
This was my wife and my second time we rented this house because it’s one of our favorite places to stay. We love the house, the beach, the lake, and the whole area!
This cabin, location and lake were the perfect antidote for an amazing relaxing vacation. The pictures do not share the wonderful size windows and views of the lake. The high point of this trip was spending lots of time on the water with the owners paddle board, kayak and canoe. I always make a point of thanking owners that allow dogs to join in on our vacation fun. THANK YOU!
Cute cabin on the beach. Perfect get away for anyone looking for a little lake therapy/wanting to be surrounded by the sounds of waves. The sunrise on the lake and sunsets over the pond were breathtaking. I recommend for anyone looking to explore the Keweenaw!
Four of us stayed at Todd's place and we had a fantastic time. The views from the house are stunning and the house itself is cute and the perfect size. We walked on the beach, skied from the house after a fresh snow, and enjoyed the sauna along with dips in the icy lake. We were able to easily access cross country ski and hiking trails. Todd was very responsive to our questions. We had an incredible time and highly recommend.
We loved the cabin! The location is pretty remote, but so peaceful and quiet! Walking the beach and using the sauna- so relaxing! The adult bedrooms are upstairs and the bathroom is downstairs- which was the only downside for us older folks. Loved our stay!
Cabin was the perfect cozy place for a winter getaway. It was great to come back to after enjoying all the snow and winter sports. The view of the lake was beautiful. We loved the wood fired sauna and stove. Beds were comfy. There were a fair amount of annoying big flies which was unexpected in January with subzero temps. Overall a great stay with everything we needed
We had a great stay here. Perfect timing for the fall colors! House location is great for spending time by the water and on the beach they have but a little bit of a drive to places. Hour from copper harbor and half hour from Calument. For fall is was nice and quite at the house and beach. We would go back.
The communication from booking to check out was amazing. The property was as described and the view phenomenal. From cool dips in Lake Superior, warming up in the sauna or traversing all the Keewenaw has to offer led to a fantastic family get away. This property is on my list to return to.
We loved our stay so much! The striking views of lake superior. The cozy wood stove. The wood fired sauna. Perfect homebase for exploring the winter wonderland that is the UP!! Todd was super kind and helpful during out stay.
Our cousins from Florida had never experienced Michigan’s Upper Peninsula and this cottage was the perfect “home base” for our trip. We had lovely weather that allowed us to keep the windows open and enjoy the sound of the waves on the beach. The sauna was used every night and is a great way to end each day. The hosts were extremely easy to work with and I can’t say enough about how welcoming their beach side cottage is. We hope we can be back to enjoy it again in the future.
