Historic home on Vermilion River
Imagine watching the river flow from your front porch, set on a spacious one-acre riverfront property shaded by majestic pecan and live oak trees. This unique getaway on the Vermilion River offers an enchanting escape, perfect for those looking to immerse themselves in nature’s beauty. Nestled within this serene landscape is a one-of-a-kind 1800s Acadian home, blending the charm of its storied past with the comforts of modern living.
Nestled at the end of a secluded driveway, beyond the classic Milton lift bridge, lies this hidden gem—the historic Riverhouse (circa late 1800s). The property ensures privacy and tranquility, offering a serene retreat with one of a kind views of the Vermilion River from its elevated vantage point, framed by massive windows. As a bridgeside home, the gentle hum of cars passing over the bridge adds to the unique charm of this distinctive property. If you think bridge noise or a steep driveway would be an issue, the Riverhouse may not be for you 🙂 (Sound machine located bedside incase bridge noise is an issue for sleeping)
The Riverhouse combines old-world charm with modern comforts. Inside, you’ll find tall ceilings and solid oak floors, complemented by contemporary updates throughout. The large master bedroom features a spacious walk-in closet. Modern amenities include fast Wi-Fi and smart home technology, ensuring convenience without compromising the home’s historic character.
Other things to note: We charge an additional $25 per night per pet, with a maximum limit of 2 pets. Please ensure pets are not allowed on the furniture and are kept in a crate if left unattended.
To uphold environmentally responsible practices, we provide filtered water from the refrigerator dispenser instead of bottled water. Additionally, water and ice filters are changed regularly according to a scheduled maintenance plan.
Fire-pit: If firewood is available, we offer 5 logs of complimentary firewood. $10 for 10 logs thereafter. Please send message on VRBO of how many bundles of 10 logs used so we can charge. This fee is used to help offset the cost of restocking firewood for our guests conviencne. Firewood is also available at local gas stations and groceries stores nearby.
Trashcan pickup at the road is on Friday mornings.
For the security of our guest and the safety of our home, we have security cameras outside of the house only and they do not record audio.
Although the Riverhouse is newer to VRBO we are not new to hosting it on other short term rental platforms and currently have a flawless 5 Star average and is listed as a "Guest Favorite" based on ratings, reviews, and reliability. See the below reviews

Victoria New York, New York Rating, 5 stars May 2024 Stayed a few nights The Riverhouse was a dream to stay in! The house was beautiful and Mike left a care package of travel essentials that was so helpful. The house is right on the water and has a beautiful porch that we spent time on each morning. Mike was very kind and checked in on us to make sure everything was going well. He was very responsive when we had questions as well. Definitely recommend staying here! We want to come back!

Matt Sycamore, Illinois Rating, 5 stars May 2024 Stayed with a pet We loved it here! We're from Chicago but have some familiarity with the area and this was a great place to stay! It had the coziness of Louisiana as well as being close enough to the main Lafayette area. Mike was fantastic in accommodating our graduation party and his responsiveness was greatly appreciated. We'll stay here again in the future!
Kay Springhill, Louisiana Rating, 5 stars May 2024 Stayed with a pet Mike gives very good instructions on how to find the place and the driveway. He was very responsive if we needed anything however it was all set up so nice and already prepared for anything you needed! The atmosphere was awesome because you were kinda away from neighbors but had neighbors. It was very peaceful. I loved the house because it was that farm feeling with even a rooster next door to say hello but far enough away it was funny to me! The location was convenient to any direction we wanted to go! I will most definitely look him up again if we have more baseball games over there! We absolutely loved it ! Thank you for a wonderful stay!
Renee Seattle, Washington Rating, 5 stars April 2024 Stayed a few nights Just loved the river house. Beautiful porch, on which you can sit on rocking chairs watching the river flow. Amazing massive clear windows bring light throughout the space. Comfortable bed and well appointed kitchen. Such a great place to relax while in town for the festival. Would stay again. Very responsive host. Highly recommended.
Albert Oran, Missouri Rating, 5 stars April 2024 Stayed with a pet WOW! This was definitely the place as advertised. Mike was extremely helpful in all areas that we had questions about, from places to eat and things to do. We probably bugged him a little too much but he was awesome. We will definitely book this house in the future. It was absolutely beautiful for each of our nine days there.
Emerald D Raleigh, North Carolina Rating, 5 stars April 2022 Stayed with a pet The river cottage is a hidden gem in Milton. The house is beautifully restored and the river views are incredible. The whole family loved their time there and can’t wait to go again. Anthony Pasadena, California Rating, 5 stars April 2022 Stayed over a week Words cannot describe this amazing human being named Mike. Mike greeted me with open arms. He represents the state of Louisiana in a way that Louisiana should be represented. Good humans. Because that's what you're going to find in Louisiana. Mike went out of his way to ensure that my stay was not only comfortable but safe, clean and hospitable. he even provided me with amenities that he didn't advertise. .

The house was well stocked and clean. The oven didn’t work so we had to do most of our cooking at my son’s house. We were booked for 9 days so that was a bit of a hassle. The property sitting on the river was very nice. The driveway is very sketchy! I wouldn’t want to navigate it during heavy rains.
We had a fantastic time being together. We sat outside & enjoyed the beautiful scenery, while we ate & spent time together as a family. It was awesome.
House was really nice and clean. Bed was comfortable and we slept well. Gave the overall stay a 4 rather than a 5 due to the proximity of the nearby bridge as the traffic going across was noisy during the day while sitting outside. However, traffic was greatly diminished at nightfall and loved the nighttime serenity.
Excellent stay and rental, the house and property were perfect! with gorgeous views from all rooms in the home, lots of extras touches to make you feel welcome and at home, very clean and beautiful home, the Host was also very helpful and responds quickly to messages, providing welcome guide and available to help with any questions to make your stay as great as possible, excellent host, I would love to stay at The Riverhouse again!! A “home away from home” feel with this booking!
You feel like you’re in the country, but only a few minutes from town. The house is clean and has all the necessary amenities. We really enjoyed our stay.
The listing accurately reflects the property. The cottage is very clean, uncluttered and nicely furnished. Very comfortable bedding and furniture and a pleasant covered front porch. Great location for visiting Lafayette and the Cajun Corridor towns south of Lafayette. Mike, the host, is very responsive, helpful and welcoming.
Super convenient location for the activities we had planned (air boat tour, Avery Island, lots of crawfish). We liked being out of town but still just minutes from restaurants, shopping and FROYO. Comfortable beds and rooms. 1/2bath is in the hallway and full bath is off the “guest room”. AC worked well, fishing equipment was provided although we didn’t have time. Super cute firepit by the river. Well stocked! Small fan and noise machine provided. Bring box fan if you need noise to sleep to drowned out outside noise. Communication was great. Make sure you receive all check in instructions, driveway is hidden.
We absolutely loved our stay at this adorable Riverhouse! We stayed with our two teen daughters who loved it just as much as we did. It was well stocked with everything you'd expect at a VRBO. We were prepared for the bridge noise, as we had read the comments, but we ran the provided fans and noise machine while sleeping, and couldn't hear it at all. We got to see the draw bridge go up a few times followed by the barges/ tug boats... so cool to see. The fishing was great and we caught the biggest fish we've ever caught. We just loved everything about the house and the location. Mike was a great host! He responded quickly to our questions and was just so friendly. We were sad to leave, but hope to come back again in the future! Thank you so much Mike!!
I highly recommend Mike's historic home, which exceeded our expectations with its exceptional cleanliness and charming Cajun character. The property boasts all necessary amenities, ensuring a comfortable stay. During our recent visit for the Youth Baseball World Series, we experienced unforeseen delays due to inclement weather, arriving at the house past 11pm. Unfortunately, the air-conditioning system was not functioning, likely due to the severe weather. I contacted Mike, and to my surprise, he responded promptly, taking extraordinary measures to resolve the issue. His dedication to ensuring our comfort was evident in his swift responses and attentive follow-up. The next morning, he arrived at the property, notifying us of his arrival via message. Mike's outstanding service, combined with the property's cleanliness and charm, make this historic home an exceptional choice. We appreciate Mike's efforts and look forward to our next visit.
The house was very clean, comfortable, and we loved being on the water, sitting out by the fire at night. It had the perfect amount of solitude, while not being too far away from plenty of things to see and do. We loved it and would love to come back!
