La Ribera

This rural town is a gateway to the natural riches of Baja California Sur and the watersports adventures along its magnificent coastline. 

La Ribera is a convenient base for exploring the East Cape, a region blessed with miles of white-sand beaches, rugged landscapes and abundant marine life. Go fishing, kitesurfing and snorkeling in the glorious turquoise water. La Ribera has a mellow ambiance and its small population is made up of local fisherman, ranchers and resort workers. 

Playa La Ribera is just a short walk from the town centre. It’s the start of an almost unbroken stretch of coastline that runs south to Cabo Pulmo. Popular activities include swimming, snorkeling and kayaking in addition to kitesurfing, paddleboarding and windsurfing. Rent equipment and organise lessons at towns such as Buenavista and Los Barriles.

Sport fishing is excellent in the Sea of Cortez. Enjoy the chance to fish for huge dorado, marlin, sailfish and tuna. You might also be lucky enough to spot dolphins, sea lions and whales. A fishing competition takes place during the town’s Easter celebrations, called Semana Santa La Ribera.  

Be sure to include a daytrip to the Cabo Pulmo National Marine Park when visiting La Ribera. The marine park features the only Pacific coral reef in the Sea of Cortez and is among the best snorkeling destinations in Mexico. Relax at its beaches, such as Los Arbolitos Beach, hike to viewpoints and discover hidden coves.

Another favourite place to visit in the East Cape is Cabo San Lucas, which is one of the liveliest resort cities in the Baja California peninsula. You’ll find glorious family-friendly beaches, boundless watersports and a buzzing nightlife scene.

Many visitors to La Ribera and the East Cape fly to either San José del Cabo or La Paz. Rent a car from the airports and enjoy the freedom to travel at your own pace. Choose between staying overnight at the town’s hotels or from a larger selection located at the nearby beach towns.
