La Libertad Region Travel Guide

Peru
Trujillo Cathedral featuring interior views and a church or cathedral
Travel through varied topography that includes gorgeous beaches on the Pacific Coast, rocky terrain in the Andes and a diverse rainforest.

The “selva” rainforest and the unspoiled ancient Moche cities characterise the eclectic region of La Libertad. Explore the area to find ruins from indigenous groups, which continue to influence today’s culture and surf by the beaches of one of the region’s many sleepy fishing villages.

For an understanding of the region’s culture and history, spend some time in the capital city of Trujillo. Enjoy the seafood cocktails known as ceviche in the charming restaurants in the city centre, which is known for its quaint colonial architecture.

Learn the national dance of Peru during the Marinera Festival in late January and the Spring Festival in September. Many events and activities also take place in Semana Santa (Easter week).

In the city’s outskirts lie a wealth of archeological sites, reminders of the country’s indigenous Moche roots. Admire the murals in the Huaca de la Luna y Sol complex. In El Brujo and Chan Chan see artistic treasures predating the Incas and enjoy panoramic views from the Andes to the coast.

Among the most alluring coastal towns is Huanchaco, which has a tranquil atmosphere. Work on your tan on the beaches of this relaxed commune, which lies in Trujillo’s northwestern suburbs. Swim in the Atlantic Ocean to make the most of the warm weather from January through April in this dry region. See fishermen out on their caballitos de totora, boats that are built according toMoche traditions.

For a change of scenery, head inland to Huamachuco, which is surrounded by mountains. Its town centre is characterized by charming colonial buildings. Admire the Marcahuamachuco pre-Inca wonders in the northwestern outskirts of the commune.

The region of La Libertad is located in the northwestern part of Peru, about 350 miles (563 kilometres) north of Lima. Fly to the Trujillo International Airport and travel through the city by bus or taxi. The city also has a cruise terminal in Salaverry.

La Libertad blends fascinating archeological wonders with beach towns and colonial communes.
