Kuata Island Travel Guide

Tourist Guide
Yasawa Islands which includes landscape views, a sandy beach and a sunset
The perfect island for budget travelers and independent adventurers who want to get back to basics in paradise.

Kuata is perfect for the budget traveler looking to experience the delights ofthis region, without the high price tag of some other islands.

The most southern island in the Yasawa chain, Kuata is neither the biggest nor the most popular destination. It has, however, managed to carve out its own niche among budget travelers and those looking for rugged adventure. The only settlement on the otherwise uninhabited island is the locally owned and laid-back Kuata Island Eco Resort.

Step off the sand into the warm water of Kuata Lagoon. Here, it’s swimming season all year-round the ocean temperature in Fiji rarely drops below 76°F (25°C), even in the winter.

Coral grows right up to the shoreline, so you won’t need to swim far before you’re immersed in rocky gardens and sea life. Local guides will introduce you to reef sharks, sea turtles, and a wide variety of tropical fish. The west side of the island falls sharply into the ocean and has some of the best diving of the surrounding islands. Take a dive trip from the resort or wander across the island and plunge right in.

Hike up to the rocky outcrops for some amazing views over the surrounding lagoons and north to the nearby Wayasewa and Waya islands. Kuata is small enough to walk around comfortably in a morning or afternoon, and it’s a nice way to break up the day. Catch a ride across to the other islands for a day trip, either exploring solo or with a guided tours from your resort.

Kuata Island Eco Resort is aimed at budget-minded and independent travelers. The bure-style (wood and straw hut) accommodations are clean and simple, and the local dishes are hearty and delicious. The resort fosters a family spirit and it won’t be long before you know all of the guests and staff by name. If you’re staying on another island in the Yasawa chain, Kuata makes a good day trip or an extra night before heading back to the main island.

The Yasawa Flyer catamaran departs Port Denarau marina each morning for the Mamanuca and Yasawa island groups. The trip to Kuata Island takes about two hours.
