#### Marvel at the body of a mummified monk in addition to the opulent art and sculptures at this revered temple.

Visit Khunaram Temple (Wat Khunaram), one of the most interesting Buddhist shrines on the island of Koh Samui. Hordes of pilgrims and tourists descend upon the temple to appreciate the macabre beauty of an embalmed and well-preserved monk. Khunaram Temple aids in highlighting the impermanence of life, one of the core doctrines of Buddhism.

The temple’s most striking feature is the mummified body of Loung Pordaeng, which sits in a glass casket. Ordained as a monk while in his early 20s, Pordaeng left the temple to become a devoted family man before returning to monkhood at the age of 50\. Pordaeng went into a meditative state in his later years before dying in 1973\. His wish was to be mummified and displayed in the temple to which he dedicated much of his monastic life.

Take a moment to appreciate the significance of the monk and watch as devotees lay flowers and other offerings. In front of the casket are a photograph and gilded sculpture of Pordaeng. Decorating the rear wall are carvings of the Buddhist wheel and tree of life. See a series of Buddha statues depicting the lord in some of his various poses.

Outside, the temple exhibits a traditional Buddhist structure set on a raised platform. Access the site via a small stairway flanked by snake carvings. Peek into the little shops where you can purchase amulets, flowers, incense sticks and other Buddhist paraphernalia.

Find the temple in the Na Muaeng district of southcentral Koh Samui, about 12 miles (20 kilometres) south of Samui Airport. Get here via rented scooter, take a rickshaw or catch a songthaew bus from resorts such as Bophut Beach, Chaweng Beach and Lamai Beach.

Khunaram Temple is open daily and admission is free, although donations are welcome. This is an active temple so dress and act appropriately when visiting. Photography is allowed but take care not to invade the privacy of the devotees. A good time to visit is early in the morning, when you can often listen to the prayer chants of the monks.

We spent 5 days here Beautiful gardens and lovely pool. We spent most of the time on the beach as there was a lovely breeze Really liked the gardens, Beach and the beach bar Thanks to Num and Oh in the Shine spa onsite for lovely massages. The Spa has a really nice vibe to it We didnt use the gym but it looked to be well maintained. The hotel front is on a busy road so it can get noisy at times if you have a room fronting on to it but the rooms themselves are comfortable and very clean. The staff are very helpful and friendly whether in front of house or in the beach club Food was lovely. Amazing choice at Breakfast buffet. A short beach walk to fishermans village if you want something different in the evening. The hotel fronts directly on to the lovely beach there is no road to cross to access.

Overall was an amazing stay. Staff are friendly and the property is well kept. Our ocean view pool villa was just what we wanted. Only 2 things that drop the rating to 4 stars instead of 5 1) wait time to get some items from housekeeping took almost 1hr (just 2 beach towels) - other services like calling a buggy or room service was very prompt and speedy 2) there was a wedding but the notification did not mention anything about loud music from the restaurant. (Only mentioned loud noise from a firework show at 1030pm - which was fine as we expected it) It went on for about 3 hrs. We could here all the music and lyrics clearly from our villa. We understand it is a wedding and a happy occassion but was not expecting the music (if any) to be that loud. If we knew we would have made arrangements to go out to town that night. It did ruin our night and was very unpleasant. We also could barely hear the TV with the music playing. We were about 3 or 4 villa ls away from the Star restaurant where the wedding was held Front office staff was nice and offered an apology meal but it doesnt amount to the 1 night value we lost to enjoy our night and villa. Hopefully the next wedding wont effect the next guests Other than that..amaIng property, great views and nice staff
