They are a string of tropical islands stretching about 120 miles south / southwest, forming the southernmost part of the continental United States. The Calusa Indians inhabited these islands over 6,000 years ago. In the early 1500’s the conquistador, Ponce De Leon sailed these waters and nearly wiped out the tribe. Famous pirates such as Edward Teach better known as Blackbeard and Jimmy Buffett frequented the Islands regularly. Some believe a pirate treasure is buried on one of the over 1700 islands. In the early 1900’s, the Florida Keys were only accessible by boat. This changed with the completion of the Henry Flagler Overseas Railway in 1912\. In 1935, a hurricane destroyed Flagler’s Overseas Railway, and a decision was made to convert the railway into an automobile roadway. U.S. Highway 1, also known as the Overseas Highway, runs from Miami to Key West. One of our most famous residents, Ernest Hemingway, chose to call the Florida Keys home. He was a renowned author and in 1953 won a Pulitzer Prize for, The Old Man and the Sea. Hemingway was instrumental in putting the keys on the map as he often wrote about his adventures in his writings. The Florida Keys are commonly referred to as the “Diving Capital of the World.” The expansive Florida reef is the only living coral reef in North America, and the third largest coral reef in the world. The diverse marine life, along with some spectacular shipwrecks, is the reason Key Largo is a world class dive destination. Not to be outdone, the Florida Keys are also world renowned for fishing, due to the number of world records, and the number of different species just off our shores. Many consider the Keys to also be the “Sport fishing Capital of the World.” The Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary protects approximately 2,900 square nautical miles of coastal and ocean waters from the estuarine waters of south Florida to the Dry Tortugas National Park. Within the boundaries of the sanctuary, lie spectacular, unique, and nationally significant marine resources including North America's only coral barrier reef, extensive seagrass beds, mangrove-fringed islands, and more than 6,000 species of marine life. The sanctuary also protects pieces of our nation’s history such as shipwrecks and other archeological treasures. Visitors to the sanctuary are encouraged to take advantage of the many recreational activities this amazing ecosystem has to offer, including world-class diving, swimming, snorkeling, and fishing. The Mariner's Club is a unique, resort style property that allows its owners to rent their units to guests and extend their club benefits. Of coarse we are biased but we think our oceanfront condo has the best location in the entire community. We are on the first floor, which means you can walk right out the backdoor to one of the best pools in all of the keys. The marina and community center are right out our front door as well as a second pool, grotto and game room. The Club is perfectly located on the oceanside of the island close to the reefs which provide world renowned snorkeling, diving, and fishing. Just past our 200’ pier, you will find Molasses Reef, recently rated “The most popular dive reef in North America”. It is stunning inside with beautiful views outside. I spent the first evening sitting on the balcony enjoying the view. It has everything you could possibly need. I even had a chance to practice my pool playing. The beds were super comfy, the bathrooms excellent and loved the gym room (which I admit we didn’t use). Even came with fishing equipment. Perfect location, perfect views, perfectly fully stocked condo. There was plenty of space for our family of 10\. Had all the sporting equipment to enjoy the amenities the resort had to offer and then some. Fully equipped fishing closet. High quality pool table and full impreaccessories. It let me show off my pool shark skills to my 7 daughters. (They were impressed ). The kitchen was fully stocked with cooking supplies and spices, which also let me show off my culinary skills by preparing full course meals during our stay. The view from the condo and front porch were spectacular. It was just a few steps to the zero entry pool. The unit was on the first floor, so accessing from the parking lot and getting to and from the pool was very easy. The host could not have been better to work with. He provided great recommendations for restaurants, activities, and anything we needed prior to arriving and while we were there. The state park with a beach, many restaurants, boat rental places, scuba diving, and many other activities are all within a few minutes of the Mariners club. All the staff at the Mariners club are extremely friendly. We highly recommend this unit and we plan to come back and visit again in the future. ##### Mike H. We had stayed here with him in 2018 & thought this would be an ideal spot to spend this time together. We had an oceanfront unit on the first floor (essential for me because I have a debilitating ankle injury)Close to the main pool and Marina. Our unit was beautifully decorated & outfitted with all necessary items. Only cons were: parking, only 1 handicap spot, probably could park 2 more small cars but some of the SUV’s parked in 2 spots! Walls were thin so once one person was up, we were all awake.The grill by the pool was a griddle, deterred us from cooking our steaks not sure if there r other types of gas grills on property? Jacuzzis were highly chlorinated & closed one of our days, not sure if that happens often? Large pool allows “soft” pool toys which we enjoyed our noodles. We also enjoyed Theatre of the Seas with our grandkids, a fishing charter which provided enough fresh tuna to share, sunsets on bayside and many delicious meals at local restaurants. ##### helene m. From the very start of pre-rental communication with Erick to check out on the final day, this was an excellent VRBO experience. The condo is absolutely beautiful! Exquisitely decorated. It is spacious and was perfect for our trip with adult siblings and our Dad. Everything is on one floor and it is literally steps to a lovely beach area and the fantastic beach entry pool. We rented a boat and the marina was great to work with. Thanks to Erick and Rosie, the owners, who went out of their way to give us excellent information on all there is to do in the area and were so accommodating to our group. They even met the Instacart delivery before our check-in on Saturday and PUT AWAY the groceries. Who does that?! It was incredible. We can't recommend this property highly enough. I'm a tough rater, and I would give it more than 5 stars if I could. My husband and I will return with our adult children and siblings. I was nervous about renting this property as it had no reviews and we would be the first visitors through the new owner. I took a chance and I’m so glad we did! The condo was huge, had tons of space for our party of 8, and had the most amazing view to wake up to every morning. I wasn’t sure if being on the first floor we would hear a lot of outside noise being so close to the pool but we literally heard nothing. It felt private, quiet and was just relaxing from the moment we got there. I’ve stayed in a lot of VRBO‘s and I can honestly say I have never stayed in one with a kitchen that was as well stocked as this one. It has literally anything you could need to cook, plenty of dishes, just every detail that could have been thought of was. Three of the bedrooms had king size beds and all of the beds and pillows were incredibly comfortable and high-quality. The fourth bedroom has the bunks and even has a pullout trundle so that comfortably slept five people. Our family had a blast with the pool table, the gym was completely stocked with tennis rackets, pickle ball rackets, a basketball and everything you could need to enjoy the amenities the resort offers. The property is close to everything and we loved every minute of our stay there. Anytime we go back to the Keys we will definitely be staying here again! ##### Alison W.
