Go to the highest railway station in Europe, visit an ice palace and view a colossal glacier when you take a picturesque train ride to this mountain pass.

Ride on a mountain train past a glacial world of snowcapped peaks to the Jungfraujoch. Known as the Top of Europe, this glacier pass sits between the mighty Jungfrau and Monch mountains at a height of 11,371 feet (3,466 metres).

Travel above the clouds via the Jungfrau Railway, starting your journey from Interlaken, Grindelwald or Wengen. The line takes you inside long tunnels through the Eiger and Monch mountains. There are two stops en route where you can look out at the spectacular scenery through windows cut into the mountains.

Your journey concludes at the highest railway station in Europe, an underground facility that is 11,332 feet (3,454 metres) above sea level. Take the elevator from here all the way up to one of the world's highest astronomical observatories, the Sphinx Observatory. Enjoy spectacular vistas from its observation terrace. The view includes the Aletsch Glacier, the largest glacier in the Alps, which covers more than 46 square miles (120 square kilometres).

The ice palace is another must-see while you are at the Jungfraujoch. This massive ice attraction started life in 1934 by local guides equipped with ice picks. Wander through its vaulted rooms to see a number of ice sculptures.

Brush up on your skiing skills at Jungfraujoch’s ski school and enjoy a sleigh ride, pulled by huskies. Then go for a meal with incredible outlooks at the Top of Europe restaurant.

With the train journey from Interlaken taking 2.5 hours each way, give yourself at least a day to enjoy Jungfraujoch's views and attractions. Jungfrau Railway trains run every day all through the year and each day’s last train departs from the glacier pass in the late afternoon.

Children under 6 years of age travel for free, while children between 6 and 15 years can also travel for free if they possess a Junior Card. These can be bought at all railway stations.

Make sure all the attractions at the top are open! The Ice Palace was closed when we went and there was no mention of this when we booked our £200+ train tickets on the day
