Rooms themselves are nice. Service is not great as this is really a barebones operation. Be advised that the hotel is not on the main drag of Maboneng (and wouldn’t advise walking anywhere after dark)

Very good service, including storing luggage for 3 nights, double checking a bar bill we queried and organising an Uber for us. It was nice to have a room with a balcony, but beware the street noise!

Huge rooms, very secure
Stayed in a King room which was enormous, including the bathroom. Bedroom had a couch and bathroom had both a tub and separate shower. The corner room also had a full wrap around balcony with a swing. Large windows in the room and in the bathroom. Restaurant and bar were excellent and the hotel is very secure. Great stay.

First thing that comes to your notice is the gloomy lighting. I don't know whether that was by design or due to the construction activity, but it didn't give a good feel. The staff were helpful. Rooms were decent. I really liked the swing that they've kept in each room. I believe some of the facilities like the pool, gym and restaurant upstairs is under renovation and will be ready in a couple of months. We stayed only for a day but one can check out their status before booking.

Nice hotel that is convenient to restaurants and stores. The staff are frequently and courteous. The room was very clean and I love the decor in the hotel.

Great find in Joburg
The staff were amazing, helpful and friendly. The area is still on the edge so they ensured that we had a complimentary shuttle to nearby restaurants and pickup from those restaurants. They booked a last minute tour for us to Soweto and the Aparthied Museum and drove us to the pick up place. The shuttle drivers were very polite and great to talk to about local places and events. Room was spacious and modern and the complimentary breakfast wonderful, you could order anything you wanted from an extensive made to order breakfast menu. A great find at a reasonable price! We learned about it from the article "36 hours in Johannesburg" in the Sunday New York Times.

My husband and I were excited to try out the Hallmark House for part of our honeymoon to South Africa when we saw it written up in Conde Nast Traveler. Unfortunately, the new hotel fell short for a few reasons: our bathroom wasn't cleaned properly, it was dirty and there were hairs on the floor. Upon check-in, the hotel gave us to a room with 2 twin beds, when we had booked a double bed room. We had to wait for them to fix it for us in the twin room. The hotel was also designed poorly where there were steps for us to walk up and down with our luggage to get to the elevator. The hallways were also designed poorly, bad lighting in the hallway and also our room. It wasn't too expensive of a hotel, but really falls short of being a good place to stay.

Great hotel, not so safe location
The hotel itself was not located in a safe area. We were told by the airport taxi driver as well as hotel staff that it was not safe to walk outside especially at night. The hotel itself was nice and the staff was friendly. We took a 7 minute Uber to the restaurants located on Fox Street. The hotel location to the restaurants and nightlife is good but the location was not the safest.

The front desk was extremely helpful with anything we needed. The decor of the hotel was fantastic. There wasn't too much in the immediate area to do.

Nightmare in the dark
The hotel staff was exceptional and went out of there way to make me so happy I could have cried But the hotel was under some kind of construction that made the power go out and after 24 hrs of travel I was not a happy traveler no elevator service no WiFi and no happiness except for the front desk staff and it was hot in the room could not sleep and still getting over my jet lag after 4 days and counting

Great pied a terre in central Joburg
Although the immediate area is not quite suited for strolling, Uber and a shuttle to nearby Maboneng Precinct made this a perfect central location for getting around the city. The hotel staff are warm and very accommodating, and the rooms are clean and comfortable. I opted for purchasing breakfast and found it well worth it. The wifi is also good, something I often have trouble with when booking other locations. The balconies are also a wonderful bonus. Thanks Hallmark for being my home away from home in the City of Gold!

Highly Recommend
The staff here goes above and beyond to make sure your stay is comfortable! The beds are heavenly. There is a shuttle that runs all day and brings you safely into the unique surrounding neighborhood with lots of shops and food!

Hotel undergoing refurbishment.
Staff excellent. Decoration not my taste - walls and corridors black and oppressive. Room outstanding. Car Park and lifts appalling but I understand were also due for refurbishment. Unfortunately downtown Joburg is still very dangerous and a taxi is critical in arriving and leaving hotel.

Unfortunately after a six hour drive our GPS took us about a mile away although we put in the hotels.com address multiple times. After driving around for 40 mins we were mins away from canceling and finding a new hotel in a safer area and happened to come upon hallmark house. Not sure if there are duplicate addresses in Johannesburg but this wasn't unfortunate. Check in was very delayed and although we didn't check in until 11pm we couldn't really sleep in due to the construction going on and a check out time of 11 which we were not able to do.

Didn't expect the city centre to be as dodgy as it is. Don't even think about walking anywhere outside the hotel after dark.

Loved this hotel - would stay there again.
Adored this place. Wonderful atmosphere that we loved, although industrial style (a commercial building being refurbished into a hotel, 'being' is an operative word as still ongoing). The rooms are spacious and airy. The staff were wonderfully warm and inviting, from front desk, to housekeeping, to restaurant. Breakfast was very good and we would recommend the pre-paid option unless you want just pastries - available also at the shop. We had a car, which is recommended if you want to visit Cradle of Humankind, Apartheid Museum, and Sandton Mall. (have GPS as road marking erratic here!). Only downside is area, which isn't very safe. The restaurant district is less than a mile away, but get the free shuttle - available until 7PM - otherwise the uber is cheap (20 rand).

We loved staying at Hallmark House! That being said - it's definitely still a work in progress. There's a lot that's not completed yet, so I'd like to go back when it's fully finished. The room was beautiful and had a great view (but earplugs to drown out the beats from the club across the street would be a wonderful addition!). Service was friendly and helpful. There are obviously still a few kinks they are working out (wifi wouldn't work so we were given a handful of voucher codes we had to re-enter every time we wanted to log on) - but in a growing and colorful neighborhood in Johannesburg Hallmark House is a perfect spot!

Very Hip & Cool, But Not Ideal Maboneng Location
This is a very trendy and stylish new hotel, with an industrial feel and youthful vibe. We found our room to be spacious, stylish and comfortable, and loved the large balcony. The service was very friendly and accommodating, and it's just a few minutes by taxi or Uber from the hip restaurants, shops & bars in the Maboneng district. Now, the downsides: It sits on a rather noisy street, and we were advised it was not safe to walk to Maboneng, even though it's close (there is a free shuttle, but its schedule ends before 7pm). Also, the hotel was so new when we stayed there, they had not yet completed decor or construction work, so there were doors sitting in the hallway, exposed wires in the public halls, and some construction noise. And there was not yet a restaurant on site, and none walking distance. Overall, the hotel is very cool and we liked it a lot — but be aware of the location (there are other hotels situated closer in the Maboneng district, which are walkable to retail, dining and nightlife).

Super hôtel! Le quartier peut déstabiliser au premier abord mais l’équipe de l’hôtel est de bon conseil. La décoration est sublime, la vue panoramique du 15eme étage est époustouflante! Ne manquez pas le restaurant dans l’hôtel, peu cher et de qualité exceptionnelle! Nous reviendrons!

Hotel situé dans le quartier des artistes. Bien tenu malheureusement rooftop en travaux donc inaccessible. Très bonne cuisine au restaurant de l'hôtel. Le personnel organise vos visites et vos déplacements.

O Hallmark é um hotel novo e bem cuidado. Equipe atenciosa e o quarto confortável. Fica em Maboneng, bairro que está se modernizando. Se você entende e gosta da Africa negra moderna e urbana, ok. Se procura por luxo e não depender de Uber para se locomover, é melhor procurar outra opção.

Pb technique mal géré et quartier dangereux.
Panne d'électricité (transfo hôtel HS en attente intervention) : en arrivant vers 17h, on nous annonce que nous devons aller dans un autre hôtel alors que nous avions réservé et payé ! Cause panne électrique. Il a fallu trouver un superviseur pour obtenir que l'hôtel se sente concerné et qu'il comprenne que c'était à eux de nous trouver un autre hôtel de substitution à leurs frais ! Une fois ceci reconnu, nous avons été transféré dans un hôtel équivalent vers 22 h... Ouf. On peut parfaitement comprendre une telle panne, mais gestion lamentable : nous n'avons pas été prévenus par tél. ou e-mail au préalable et il a fallu insister pour les voir prendre le soucis à leur compte après l'accueil initial clairement lamentable. Sinon, le peu que j'ai vu des chambres a l'air TB ; par contre le quartier est en "requalification" et pas question de faire 500 m à pied même le jour. Dommage.

O hotel é muito moderno, com amplos quartos e cama muito confortável. O banheiro também é excelente. Achamos apenas o ar condicionado central muito frio (ficava ligado direto) e a localização do hotel fica em um bairro não muito agradável, com mendigos e pedintes (recomendamos apenas o deslocamento por meio de carro). O café da manhã era incrível.

Hotel remodelado de una fábrica antigua moderno cómodo y limpio. En la zona por la noche no hay nada y es aconsejable moverse en uber. Para el día hasta las 18hs ofrecen un servicio gratuito de transporte a un área de moda Maobeng.
