A city landmark, this interesting building showcases design and architectural features that created a grand impression in the late 1800s and still inspire today.

The Iowa State Capitol Building in Des Moines is immediately identifiable by its gold dome that is visible from many parts of the city. The impressive building was constructed between 1871 and 1886. The 23-karat gold leaf roof sparkles in the sun and outshines the building’s other four cupolas sheathed in weathered copper. Stand in front of the structure before entering to appreciate its grandiose design.

Inside, various materials come together to create a majestic environment. Rich-colored woods, marble and metal sculptures all compete for your attention. Keep looking upward as well as around for detail in the craftsmanship. Note that many of the light fixtures are originals and were modified from gas to electricity.

Lavish components are clearly displayed in the Governor’s Office. Look for the collection of dolls dressed in clothing styles representing the wives of past governors.

Ascend the broad marble and granite staircase to view the House of Representatives chamber and the Senate Chamber.

Visit the law library, which is one of the largest in the country. It features astounding spiral staircases and wrought iron railings, with floors and ceilings that date back to 1884.

Changes to the State Capitol Building continue, with a 500-space parking lot conversion into 10 acres (4 hectares) of terraces and gardens and a glass floor under the rotunda that was returned to its original appearance.

Take a self-guided tour, although the many hallways and staircases may cause confusion. Guides are available to escort you if you pre-register.

Visit the gift shop on the main floor before you leave for souvenirs.

The Iowa State Capitol Building is located in Des Moines’ Historic East Village. It is closed Sundays and holidays. Schedule a tour by phoning or go online to book for groups of 10 or more. Audio self-tours are also available. Use metered street parking or park for free at the State Capitol Complex Parking Garage, with designated spots for visitors with disabilities.
