Frequently asked questions

What is the best area to stay in Iles Du Salut?
The best area to stay in Iles Du Salut is on Royale Island, the largest and most accessible of the three islands.

Royale Island is the primary hub for visitors, offering the most developed facilities and historical sites. You'll find the main jetty here, where boats arrive, and a selection of the best-preserved former prison buildings. The island is relatively compact and easy to explore on foot, with well-maintained paths leading to points of interest like the lighthouse, the old hospital, and the chapel.

Couples often find Royale Island ideal for a historic and scenic escape. The island's tranquil setting, combined with its fascinating past, provides a unique backdrop for a memorable trip. There are several viewpoints offering expansive ocean vistas, superb for enjoying sunsets.

For those interested in the islands' history, Royale Island is the most comprehensive choice. The former penal colony's administrative centre was located here, and you can explore various remnants of that era, including the director's house and the prisoners' quarters.
When is the best time to go to Iles Du Salut?
The best time to go to Iles Du Salut is during the dry season, which typically runs from July to December.

During these months, you'll experience less rainfall and more sunshine, making it ideal for exploring the islands and enjoying outdoor activities. The sea conditions are generally calmer, which is great for the boat journey to and from the islands and for swimming or snorkelling around the coast.
