Huizen is a surprising town in the green, leafy Gooi. It is located right on the water, and holds the most fascinating history. In the seventeenth century Huizen was a farming village with municipalities where farmers grazed their cattle. You’ll still find many farms from that time around the medieval Dutch Reformed church in the city centre.
The Huizer milkmaid in the crest of Huizen recalls that time as well. In the eighteenth century Huizen developed as a fishing village, owning one of the largest fishing fleets around the Zuiderzee. When the Zuiderzee changed into the Ijsselmeer, the fishing industry in Huizen was over. Fishermen’s sons turned themselves into skilled artisans in the construction industry and the fish peddlers devoted themselves to trade in cheese. Many remnants of this part of history can be found in Huizen.
In the last decades, Huizen developed into a modern city on the Gooimeer with several marinas, a nice shopping centre and tourist attractions.
There are many hotels in Huizen. It is quite a small city, so no matter where you will stay, you will always be close to the city centre, the nature, the public transportation to surrounding cities and the sights around the city. Choose a hotel just outside of Huizen for a relaxing stay in nature.
Many events take place in Huizen on a yearly base. For example, in May/June there are Art & Culture activities such as the Brugfeest at Sailing School Kooizand. In September the Huizerweek takes place with the traditional Huizerdag. There you will find multiple attractions, a large musical event and the Huizer harbour festival with the Huizer Botterdagen, a Botter Market with old crafts and music and the Oldtimer festival. In December there are cosy markets completely in the Winter mood. There are many more events that you can attend in Huizen.
Huizen is located in a region well-known for its green nature and of course water. That makes it a perfect region for outdoor activities. There are many great activities you can participate in during the summer, such as running or skating. But you can also admire the nature while going for a (long) walk or a relaxing bike ride. There are several routes that you can follow.
You can choose from a diverse range of hotels if you decide to stay in the city of Huizen. Each hotel in Huizen has its own qualities and specifications, so make sure to pick a hotel that matches your preferences. Stay closer to the border of the city to experience the nature in the area, or pick a hotel in the city centre to experience the daily hustle of the locals.
