In winter, snow can be melted on the wood stove or gas burner for washing. During bridge season (Nov & Apr) or during periods of extended summer drought, you'll need to bring all your water. \- Headlamps/flashlight to get to the outhouse and sauna, and for late arrivals The cabin is equipped with: \- wood sauna - 100 yards from the cabin \- outhouse \- wood stove for heating \- woodshed with ax, hatchet & buck saw (be prepared to split your kindling) \- gas & solar lighting \- 2-burner gas cooktop \- outdoor cook grill (bring your own charcoal & watch for fire bans) \- dishes, cutlery, pots, pans, cutting board, kettle, dishwashing basin Perfect for solo adventurers and couples willing to pack in and pack out drinking water and linens. Some cell networks, notably T-mobile and Verizon have full service, others none. Take screenshots or print information before arrival. Sauna Liability: Please note that guests use the sauna at their own risk. \*Kids stay free (12 years & under) - please notify us. We know how important it is to have your canine companion with you when travelling. Our pet fee is $30 (dogs only) with a limit of one dog per stay. WARNING - ROUGH ROAD CONDITIONS!!! The North Shore has experienced unprecedented snow melt and rainfall these past few springs that degraded the upper road. It is in a long queue for repairs. Spring/Summer/Fall Access: If there is no snow on the ground, access by vehicle is possible ONLY with a HIGH CLEARANCE vehicle. The road can be particularly tricky after heavy rainfall. Alternatively, with a NORMAL CLEARANCE vehicle, you can drop your supplies at the "Y" intersection at the bottom of the last hill and do a 10min walk up the last 200 yards. Winter Access: If there is snow on the ground, you will HAVE TO WALK up roughly 20 minutes from where the plowing ends, regardless of the type of vehicle. It is recommended to drop off your supplies where the plowing ends, and then drive back down for overnight parking. Use of a kids' sled is recommended to carry your supplies. If road conditions are icy or unplowed, do not attempt to go up - we are not responsible for your towing. The winter walk up can be quite a challenge. Dress accordingly, come prepared, and recognize that the wood-fired heat can take a few hours for the cabin to warm up upon your arrival. We highly recommend you arrive in the daylight - it will make your way up to the cabin much nicer, as it is a beautiful walk up. Parking: There are two designated overnight parking areas located approx. 200 yards after you turn onto Tower Rd. There is an open area on the right-hand side (north side) of the maintained road, and there is a second parking area on the left-hand side just a few yards up. From here, the walk-up is approximately 1.2 miles or 30-45min, mostly uphill. You will get hot Trust us... it is truly worth it! ## Property amenities ### Ski - Cross-country skiing nearby ### Pool/Spa - Sauna ### Parking and transport - Car required - Parking on site ### Food and drink - So peaceful and has everything you need. Just perfect. The sauna is amazing! ##### Jason C. Stayed 7 nights in Jul 2023 ### 10/10 Excellent #### Lynsey S. 13 Oct 2024 Liked: Cleanliness, check-in, communication, location, listing accuracy #### Fall Climb We loved the property with the beautiful trees and wildlife. Our only wish it that it wouldn't have been so dry this year so we would have felt comfortable starting a bonfire. Which obviously is no fault of the host. The cabin was clean and organized. We loved it so much we wish we could've stayed a few more days. ##### Lynsey S. Stayed 2 nights in Oct 2024 ### 10/10 Excellent #### Nada A. 17 Oct 2023 Liked: Cleanliness, check-in, communication, location #### Getaway from it all Beautiful 20-acre Maple Forest. One of the best rustic cabins I have ever stayed in and I have traveled this area for 35+ years. Location unbelievable, good directions and description, enjoyed the sauna, view through large windows in cabin breathtaking. Only change I would make to listing: bring ice or other means to refrigerate food. listing didn't indicate this. No bathroom, outhouse only. I think listing said there is half bath. ##### Nada A. Stayed 3 nights in Oct 2024 ### 8/10 Good #### Cole 5 Aug 2024 Liked: Cleanliness, property conditions & facilities Disliked: Communication Was very nice to be in the middle of know where. It would be nice if the property wasn’t so overgrown and you could do some yard stuff, games etc. Would also be nice to just know maybe to bring a 4 wheeler otherwise it’s a hike. Would come back, unfortunately rain washed us out a day early so that was a bummer, as we still had to pay for it of course. ##### Cole Stayed 2 nights in Aug 2024 This review was submitted before 2018 and can't be verified. ### 8/10 Good #### Angela S., Bigfork, MN 1 Sept 2016 #### Great location and loved the simplicity! My husband and I had a great stay at Mokki Homestead Retreat. It was such a great location - close to both Grand Marais and Grand Portage, but far enough out that it was super quiet and private. We enjoyed the sauna and the "tiny house" aspect of the cabin. It was nice to just relax with each other and our stack of books for the weekend. The only reason it doesn't get 5 stars from us is that the loft bed was a little uncomfortable. I see Lonnie, the owner, dogsleds and kayaks in the Arctic. So compared to the sleeping conditions he's used to from that, the bed is probably a dream...but we're used to memory foam! :) ##### Angela S. Stayed 2 nights in Aug 2016 ### 8/10 Good #### Allen B. 8 Sept 2022 Liked: Cleanliness, location #### Great place to unplug Great spot to unplug and recharge. Bring a radio... battery powered. After a couple days it's nice to hear the weather. Cell service is 0 on Verizon. I'll be going back. ##### Allen B. Stayed 2 nights in Sep 2022 ### 10/10 Excellent #### Amanda H. 30 May 2022 Liked: Cleanliness, check-in, communication, location, listing accuracy #### Wonderful place My husband and I spent the long weekend at Mokki. This place is wonderful and we are already planning our next trip when we can return. The property is beautiful, peaceful and relaxing. The place was tidy and had everything we needed. The instructions left behind for the sink, fireplace, sauna, etc. were all very clear. The communication with the manager was great. Highly recommend a stay at Mokki Hovland Hut for a place to unwind and restore. ##### Amanda H. Stayed 3 nights in May 2022 ### 10/10 Excellent #### Melanie W. 12 Oct 2021 Liked: Cleanliness, check-in, communication, location, listing accuracy #### Relaxing Oasis in the Woods The property and cabin were amazing and just what we needed for a relaxing fall anniversary celebration. I would not recommend visiting without an all wheel drive or 4 wheel drive vehicle. The windows in the cabin were mesmerizing as was the screened in porch where we were able to sit and listen to the rain! Thanks for sharing this slice of heaven in the woods! ##### Melanie W. For us and our dog, it was really enjoyable when we finally arrived. As the listing mentions, the last mile of uphill unmaintained gravel/rocky road is pretty rough and tricky, but I'd imagine it much more doable in an SUV. The outhouse was close to the cabin, the solar-powered lights in the cabin made no electricity no problem, and the sauna was cute and relaxing (we used it three times in one weekend). The bucket sink system made sense and was a little tedious, but just reminded me how grateful I am to have running water at home. The gas stove was handy, though we had trouble with the wood stove smoking up the cabin a bit. Thanks to the owner for keeping so much chopped wood available and lots of detailed instructions for everything. I wouldn't recommend this cabin for friends who aren't comfortable with wall-size windows on two sides of the structure, or those who are concerned about wild animals, but it was just fine for our experience. The sun through the trees is a much nicer wake-up routine than an alarm clock. The door lock didn't work, but the owner messaged about replacing it soon. I imagine the mosquitoes would be terrible in summer, but our fall weather of 40s–60s felt just right for this place. ##### John W. A place to simplify and unwind. A place to unplug and get close to nature. It was everything we were looking for ##### Gina T. My partner and I love it up north, and I wanted somewhere quiet and remote to unwind after the year we've been having. Since there was no rain, our little car (Chevy Aveo) made it up the big hill just fine. We spent our weekend there splitting time between hiking and just relaxing in the cozy warmth provided by the woodstove. If you used to read all the time and now seem unable to find the time or focus, I would encourage you to bring a book up, both of us finished around 400 pages while we were there. Our first hike was to the high falls on Pigeon River, and when we found a nice secluded spot off the paved trail, I asked Aj to marry me. We finished the hike with rings on our fingers and then went to Mt. Josephine, where we struggled our way to an extraordinary view. The rest of the vacation passed too quickly, i'd have stayed another week if I could, but this place will always occupy a fond corner of my memory. Hope to be back, or check out another Mokki some time soon! ##### Iggy D. For no running water and no electricity, it was so comfortable! Everything down to the last detail was thought of. I would definitely recommend staying here. The one small downfall is the road to the cabin is quite diffyto drive on. We had an SUV, but even still it was challenging. If you don’t mind that, you will love it ##### Kimberli G. The road up is not ideal for compact cars, but otherwise, it's easy to get to Lake Superior, Grand Marais, and to one of the best pies on the North Shore (at the Chicago Bay Market). We love this place and have returned year after year. ##### Tristra Y. ### 10/10 Excellent #### Amie A., Alexandria MN 2 Nov 2018 #### Just perfect! The little cabin was exactly the place we needed to be. Set way back in the woods and really peaceful. Away for all the noise & lights. Cell service was sporadic so that was a nice change of pace to not have our jobs weighing on us for a little while. We did a lot of hiking. High Falls and Devils Kettle/Superior trail were just beautiful to hike to. We also hiked Mt Josephine Trail - difficult but worth the view at the top of Canada and Isle Royal. My husband read some of Lonnie's book that he had written (not enough time to finish) and just enjoyed relaxing. Mornings were slow with coffee and breakfast. Nights were relaxing with the sauna and bonfire and lots of much needed sleep. Naniboujou Lodge (about 8 min away) was a nice gem to find for breakfast and dinner spot.. We would definitely be back to this area and stay here again. ##### Amie A. Stayed 3 nights in Oct 2018 ### 10/10 Excellent #### Linda A. 18 Oct 2018 #### An off-grid dream cabin! The Mokki cabin was the perfect little off-grid cabin we were seeking. I had a similar cabin (treehouse) in upstate NY so coming to Mokki was like coming home. Relatively remote but still close to lots of great hikes and amenities...and waking up surrounded by trees was just plain perfect. Highly recommended! ##### Linda A. Perfect get away and close to trails and all that Grand Marais offers while being totally secluded in the woods. Our almost 2 year old was especially enthralled with the indoor swing chair! We may need to look into a adding one to our home now. Made several trips to the nearby Paradise Beach for long walks and agate hunting. We also enjoyed learning more about the owners exciting adventures through the books available on site. We would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for remote rustic charm. The outhouse was a tad claustrophobic and a little unnerving with the exposed nails - just make sure to check your surroundings on the way in and out. Thanks for the great memories. We were sad to leave and are already thinking about our return trip next summer. ##### Amy K. Stayed 3 nights in Aug 2018 ---
