"There are two things to consider with this chalet: the chalet itself, and the location.The chalet is beautiful and fully equipped. But don't expect a flawless, antiseptic house with mirror-polished floors. The Gruissan chalets are charming precisely because they're a little weathered. They're wooden stilt houses exposed to sea air, humidity and the tramontane wind. They have enormous character, and that's exactly why they can be "imperfect", yet emotionally they're worth more than any modern home.Note that the house is effectively split in two: an upper and a lower part, like two small apartments, since the lower floor has its own bedroom and bathroom. The two are connected only by external stairs, so if you have young children, this layout isn't ideal. Otherwise the house is wonderful and welcoming, and the host is extremely kind and lightning-fast to reply.As for Gruissan and the Plage des Chalets: it's an almost magical place I'd move to tomorrow if I could. We stayed during one of the most intense heatwaves on record, yet the climate here was perfect, cradled by a sea breeze that always cooled us. We never wanted to leave.If, like me, you've always dreamed of coming here because of Betty Blue (37.2 le matin), I'd avoid peak season: it's ultimately a seaside resort, and it loses some of that timeless, suspended magic when crowded. Still, compared to 90% of European beach spots, it's wonderfully livable, with vast open space."
