Gaucho Cabin: Walk to Lake Superior,Minutes to Downtown Grand Marais

Float among the stars and aurora gaze in the hanging loft net. This idyllic woodland setting is home to fox, bear, deer, eagles, wolves, and even possibly a wandering moose.

⋇ 2 min Walk to Lake Superior Beach
⋇ 9 miles from Grand Marais
⋇ Backyard Access to Superior Hiking Trail
⋇ Backs Superior National Forest
⋇ Seasonal Lake Superior Views

An ideal place for reconnecting with nature, a favorite person, and simple joys. Experience an unforgettable stay in this 2021 /\ Frame.

Nestled in a blanket of trees, it blends both seclusion and companionship.

Escape the chaos of life as you completely unwind by the fireplace. Let your imagination wonder on the Lake Superior beach or take a nap in the hammock after a long day of hiking/skiing.

Surrounded by evergreen and birch trees, there is a wide variety of North woods flora and fauna, meandering creeks, and the gorgeous Lake Superior just a short walk away..

The open floor plan and a wall of windows keeps light in during the day, while at night it erases the division between inside and out, giving you the feeling of floating amongst the stars. The expansive night sky in this dark sky sanctuary is especially clear on our wrap around deck.

Enjoy walks to the beach, breathtaking sunsets and beach bonfires, kayaking, biking, hiking to the nearby waterfalls, shopping for vintage treasures or just relaxing/stargazing in the beautiful private backyard.

Built for travelers seeking a retreat in a sustainable stay, we designed this cabin to offer all the necessities one would need in thoughtfulness of nature: solar power for lighting and charging electronics, gas fireplace and stove, A-frame outhouse and rain barrel collection.

The inspiration for Gaucho Cabin came from our time spent living in Argentina, which is where our story together began. Our hope is that travelers can enjoy the same serenity from nature in this rustic refuge that our journey’s brought us.

The interior has been thoughtfully curated with unique decor from Patagonia, Argentina and local Grand Marais artists.

FAQ:

Is this cabin for everyone? — Not exactly… We want to be clear that this is an off-grid cabin that was meant to be used as a rustic retreat. We know that not everyone digs an outdoor bucket shower or an outhouse.

Is the bed upstairs? — Yes. The bed is located in the high loft which can only be accessed by a steep ladder. Guests use at their own risk.

Is there Wifi or cell network service? — There is some cell signal. Verizon tends to have much better reception than At&t or T-Mobile.
There is no wifi… some say for an even better connection :)

What is a “dry” cabin? — This means you will be completely off-grid: solar-powered lighting & charging, plumbing free, outhouse, etc.

What about water? — We provide drinking water in larger jugs May-October. Guests will need to bring any drinking or wash water November - April. We have a small creek in spring and rain barrels in summer months for collecting wash water. In winter snow can be melted for wash water.

What is your bathroom situation? — We have an A-frame outhouse just next to the cabin. There is also an outdoor bucket shower May-Oct (see in photo gallery). Guests who would prefer a little more water pressure can consider visiting the Grand Marais Rec park for a $4 shower, or buy a $10 day-pass to the Grand Marais YMCA to take advantage of the gym, workout facility, showers, hot tub, sauna, and pool.

Fire Pit & Grill? — Yes, May through Oct. We have a propane BBQ. We supply the propane and utensils. There is a fire pit. Wood bundles can be bought in town. Guests are free to use fire pit year round but are responsible for snow removal to use it if they wish to do so.

Do you have a coffee maker? — We have a pour over and filters for your use.

How remote is the cabin? — The cabin is easily accessed (approx. 300 ft) just off Hwy 61 on a maintained driveway. Your views are woods, nature & Lake Superior. While this cabin is completely private, there are neighbors several hundred feet through the woods. However, just as most cabins close to Lake Superior, you could have some road noise.

Winter Conditions:
We recommend AWD/4WD vehicle from Nov 1 to April 30. 2 wheel drive vehicles are free to use the parking at the bottom of the driveway (300ft from cabin). Due to plowing shortages we cannot guarantee that the road will be plowed on a daily basis.

We have 2 parking spots available at the bottom of the driveway in the case that guests are uncomfortable with driving the steep hill or that the conditions are unfavorable to do so. It is approximately a 300ft walk up to the cabin from the bottom of the driveway.

Pets
: We do not make exceptions to our no-pet policy. Any pet hair will result in a $300 fine regardless of any circumstances.

Amazing
This was the perfect solo long weekend off-grid in the woods. The level of small details that were present everywhere just made this such a perfect place to go, be quiet and reconnect with nature, even when sitting inside by the fire and staring outside. Would recommend this property 100% and will be staying again.

Perfect getaway
We were looking for somewhere to “camp” but with some of the luxuries of home! This place was absolutely perfect! You can tell the owners take a ton of pride in the house as well as the experience you have! The cabin is not only adorable and very well kept but every piece is carefully thought out. The owners do additional add ons to the stay that make the entire experience! If you want an incredible up north experience book this!!!

Peaceful and beautiful!
This adorable A Frame exceeded all expectations! It was wonderful to be off the grid for a few days. The space was clean, super comfortable and close enough to Grand Marais so that we could do some town exploration! Can’t wait to go back!

Perfect experience if you want to be "off the grid", but still close to Grand Marais, and North Shore excursions. Glamping without the tent - loved it!

You won't regret your stay
We stayed here for 3 nights. The 1st 2 nights we had pretty mild weather and the nights were beautifully clear. They are not kidding when they say you will see more stars than you have in your life. This is one of the best things about this place. I have never seen the world SO dark as when we turned the cabin lights out and stared at the stars. It is fascinating and when you come from a big city, something you may have never seen. And this kind of charm is what you are looking for with this cabin. It does not have the creature comforts yet it is impossibly comfortable. It is exactly what you need. It will slow you down, and bring calm. It's quiet and peaceful and you are literally living in the middle of nature. The beach is a quick walk back down the way you drove and across the road. Walk there even in the winter! The bed is THE most comfortable bed I have ever slept in outside my own sleep number! Not having water was very easy to manage and the outhouse is SUPER clean. I really dislike camping so this was a big stretch for me and I LOVED it. We will definitely be back. Also, the hosts are super nice and very responsive. The only feedback I left was that the heater was super noisy and affected our peaceful quiet sleep. Hosts said it would be fixed! You will love this place.

Beautiful escape!
Beautiful escape in Grand Marais! Would be so fun to rent the other cabin with friends and join for a fire and wilderness escape. The stars are INCREDIBLE. We missed the no running water aspect, it wasn't spelled out clearly which is my own bad for not planning ahead but overall an amazing wilderness escape - they even included such small, thoughtful touches which I absolutely love! Highly recommend :)

Cute spot for a getaway
On the fence? BOOK IT! Overall amazing experience from the time of booking until the end of our stay. Stevie was amazing with communication to ensure an amazing getaway! The property was exactly how it looks in the pictures along with being very clean. This place is perfect if you are looking for a secluded getaway without being too secluded. The best part of the stay is the lofted net where you can spend time just looking out at the stars, as if you are like us, we don’t get too many stars in the city. This is a gem of a place to stay- seriously just book it, you won’t regret it!
